I think they all will look fine. As to the flat cap--just don't wear it if Jock is in your neighborhood! He may snatch it from atop your head

Just kidding...I like the first of the two flatcaps better, but also think the deerstalker will look great with the outfit pictured.

I remember telling someone all that, and that the TV series with Jeremy Brett was more correct in showing him 'detecting' in 19th century gentleman's evening dress- and then going home the same night to see Mr Brett sporting a deerstalker in that week's episode. Anyway, and as has already been intimated, in the day they were strictly country, and not city, wear.

Yes; I was very, very much a fan of Jeremy Brett's portrayal, and I remember with surprise and disappointment that one episode. Back to the OP question though, I think that what we do is a matter of what is traditional, what meets people's expectations... and what we like.

    Many thanks all.

Many thanks all. I have decided on a harris tweed flat cap in Blue Barleycorn. My son-in-law is a big Sherlock Holmes fan and has a deerstalker hat though he does not wear it much, if ever. I think he just got it as a momento. So I tried it on and Noooo!
