You're supposed to collect them?
I just buy them and drink them.
I currently have 1 bottle of Scotch...Tomatin 12...an interesting taste sensation. Slightly fruity....something I've never experienced in a Scotch before.

Seriously, though, aside from the occasional sip of sacramental wine in church, I think the first alcoholic beverage I ever had was a whiskey sour my grandfather made, probably using Old Forester Kentucky Bourbon (bottled here in Louisville and one of his favorites).
For a long time, I preferred bourbon (especially small batch) to Scotch, but I hadn't found single malts yet. These days, I think I'd take a (Speyside) single malt to a bourbon, depending on the bourbon (some of the small batch and single barrels are really good), but most bourbons to a blended Scotch. Of course that's all academic for now, since I can't buy any to experiment with.
Some of you gents have a very fine collection of spirits. Enjoy them in good health and good company!

John: My favorite bourbon is Maker's Mark, because it makes the most wonderful mint juleps. We have a patch of mint just outside our house and my wife makes the syrup from chopped fresh leaves.
Also, I prefer George Dickel to Jack Daniels. It's smoother.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

All the bottles on the shelves are single malts except for the two bottles of Sheep Dip at the left bottom. Both are excellent blends. The Old Hebridean 1990 is incredibly smooth, but has a peaty finish.
The next picture is of some "friends" I keep under the bar simply because I have run out of room on the shelves. The Glengoyne is completely peatless, even to the extent of having "untainted by peat" printed in tiny letters on the bottle. :-) The two right-most bottles are quite peaty - the Bowmore having the compensating characteristic of being almost as smooth as the Old Hebridean. The Ballantruan (distilled by Tomintoul) is a technically fine malt, but very peaty, thus I save it for folks who appreciate the peat.
My inventory philosophy is kind of the opposite of Jock's. I have several cases of malt, but no more than two bottles of each kind and none called Talisker. I have nothing against it, except it is toooooo peaty. :-)
John
I knew there was something about you I liked the moment I first "met" you here, and now I know what it is. My, my that is an impressive layout of single malts there, one to be envied and enjoyed. My philosophy is similar to yours, try a lot and keep all the ones you like in stock. I will post a list and photo of my collection later tonite when I have more time.
But color me impressed.

At the present time I have, Glen Morangie Portwood, Glen Morangie Sherrywood, Laphroig 10yr, Laphroig Quarter Cask, Glenfiddich 15, Bowmore 18, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie 15, Isle of Jura Superstition, Caol Ila, Lagavulin 16, McClellands Lowland, Yamazaki 12yr, Chivas Regal 18yr. There is also a recently deceased bottle of Bowmore 14yr still on the shelf. Even if I never buy another bottle, my descendents will be drinking to me with my whisky after I'm gone. Not quite sure how I came to collect all these. I didn't realize what was up there till I took inventory for this post. Is "whisky aquisition syndrome" listed anywhere?

I also have about a dozen US Kentucky Bourbons and Tennessee Whiskies but do not have the list with me and do not often partake of them. I know that there is Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig, Four Roses, and Maker's Mark in the pile plus a few others.
I have another 10-15 bottles that are duplicates of the above vintages stashed away as well, so I take Mookien's approach to the Jock Scot stocking approach. Have lots of different whiskies I have tried and keep most of them in stock for when I need a taste or three.
Picture of my whisky cache to follow this evening.

And the winner is ..... who?
Jeff: Great collection and selection! Looks like we share an affinity for Auchentoshan, Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and especially Glenmorangie. I'll bet we could talk (and drink) for hours. :-)
You have a number of Aberlours, while I only stock the 16. I have been tempted to buy the A'bunadh, but fear it is too peaty. What do you think?
I'll bet that Auchentoshan 24 Signatory bottling was cheap. Did you pick up a bottle at Sam's Club? ;-) Actually, Sam's recently sold a Glen Taite - a 19 year-old malt distilled at Macallan that is wonderful. But, I haven't seen it in a while and it may have been a one off. I keep looking for it, though.
I bought a bottle of the Welsh Penderyn "Aur Cymru", but did not care for it - too much like brandy wine for me.
I'm looking forward to the picture. I'll drain a dram tonight and toast you, "Slainte mhor agus sonas".
John

Greg: Thanks for the compliment on my bar. I am proud of it. It took me a while to get it "right". I actually call it "John's Scotch and Literary Bar", since I have pictures of the Bronte sisters, et. al. on the walls. Because I enjoyed the TV series so much, my friends call me "Monarch of Den". :-)
I must say you may have to reconsider your announcement until after Jeff posts his picture. That's OK with me. I would be perfectly happy taking home 2nd prize in this contest.
