I think the Photo in question was to show that conflicts in Afghanistan is not new.
It certainly isn't. As Rudyard Kipling advised The Young British Soldier in the same time period as the photo:
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."
