Attending whisky tastings is a good way to figure out your preferences. If you can find a bar with a wide selection of Single Malts go there and try one a night and keep track of what you drink and your impressions. When I travel for business I try to find a pub or pub-like restaurant with a good selection and try a new one each night. I usually each supper at a table then move to the bar for the Scotch. I get the Scotch in a belled glass to help concentrate the aromas and a side glass of water. Talking to people around me and watching others I can make that drink last 45 minutes to a hour.
I like the Islay malts mostly and my wife prefers Speyside malts. That said, we have some from each area in our cabinet. Enjoy the exploration.
