Around 20 years ago a friend found a number of Scottish-made sealskin Evening Dress sporrans complete with chainstraps in the purse section of an ordinary Department Store (Macy's or some such). These were stamped MADE IN SCOTLAND REAL LEATHER and were normal mens sporrans. Sealskin at the time was illegal to import, but here they were! He bought one, and told me about them. When I went down they had all been sold. I think they were around $40, a fraction of what they would have cost as sporrans.

My routine is scan the length of suits - looking at cuffs and shoulders, then I check out purses and belts (sporrans and kilt belts) then shoes. Lastly I walk the ladies skirts looking for tartan. The week after I found the jecket I spotted a MacKenzie tartan and my heart leapt - turns out it was a former school uniform kilt for girls, but for $7.00 my daughter has a MacKenzie kilt to wear at the games this summer rather than her school kilt. I have also found a few kilt pins in the jewelry section, but have not bought any of them as they were cheap and ugly. To clarify I maybe do this once every 2 months or so... its not like I am there every day! Scott
