What an interesting, information laden, and useful posting! Thanks gents.

Now, you've all got me thinking about an 8-yard, military-box-pleated kilt in regimental cloth. But, in what tartan? ;-)
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

    Hi Fr. Bill,
I have just received a 4-yd box pleat from Matt. It's under the post "Summer in High River". I think there's a pleat shot there. I've learned that most kilt-makers including Matt will use 16oz wool cloth to give it weight and help it hang. In my very limited and recent experience wearing it, I can say that I hardly want to take it off. Very comfortable, serviceable, historical. Take a look and PM me if you would like more observations. This one is Robertson Red, Wilsons colours.

Hi David! I did see those - it's a beautiful kilt, and yes there's a shot of those beautiful pleats. Your post was one of the reasons I asked, and as Matt says, it doesn't look an awful lot different from the heavier beauty he's wearing above. I would never consider less than 16 oz., and might even ask the kiltmaker about 18 or more when I've saved my shekels and get around to ordering.

Thanks so much for offering those observations!

Great thread, answered alot of questions I had.

Matt, does it cost more to have a box pleated kilt made out of five yards instead of the usual four?

    Thanks
    Somebody ought to.

[smart answer]Yes, it costs exactly one yard's worth of cloth more.[/smart answer]

Seriously, yes, a bit more, as a good part of the cost of the kilt is the material cost. So five yards will cost more than four, etc. But not prohibitively more. PM me or send me an email if you'd like further details.
