I am looking forward to Part II. It would be interesting to see how much of a change there is - if at all.

Me too! Very interesting indeed!
Thanks Jock,

Jock, are you seriously trying to tell us that your opinion poll was compiled by a bunch of sassenachs? And are you then going to say that anything they say has any validity, whatsoever, for genuine Scottish opinion? Generals, Colonels, whatever they may be, they obviously have about as much relevance to actual life in Scotland as fly in the air. Please tell me that you do actually have contact with real Scottish people and that this is not the sort of opinion you are trying to promulgate as factual?

Phil, if you care to read my last paragraph in my first post , I fully accept that 9 points of view was not, and never could be, a true cross section of Scots opinion. My point was that over 500 years of Scots kilt wearing experience could not be ignored.
The 9 interviewed are Scots born (the question Master, me, was born in Cheltenham, by accident for what it is worth) with deep Scottish roots and like many Scots(me included) moved outwith Scotland to make our way in life. I have made no secret of that. In point of fact I have made a very firm point of making that clear later in the thread. Take it for what it is, a bit of interesting(?) fun ----I claim it to be nothing more and if any one wants to draw a conclusion from it, then so be it.

to be fair though, it's not really 500 years of experience though is, it is 60 or 70 years from similar men of a similar age with a similar experience of kilt wearing , so it's not really surprising that very similar views are held!
It is nonetheless an interesting view of a very small set of fairly well to do gentlemen of good social standing, and to me not very surprising, but it is not really a very true reflection of how the kilt is worn in Scotland by the general hoi poloi!

Gentlemen, Jock has made it abundantly clear that this was an after dinner parlour game, instead of charades. At no time has he stated that it is indicative of a general poll of highland Scots. A gentleman has had a bit of fun with his mates and spouses and people are comming down on him like a ton of bricks. All he is doing is relating an interesting story.

Indeed very true , and I think that many of us accept it exactly on that basis, but I am wary that some forum members might think that the reponses recieved are how a kilt should be worn, rather than how a kilt can be worn, and in consequence not realise that there are many other ways of kilt wearing that are equally acceptable, not perhaps as traditional , but just as valid.

And explaining a civilian box pleated kilt , for example, particularly as I have never seen one was hilariously tricky! Jock,
This is great! Not sure how I missed this and didn't see it earlier!
I would have loved to have sat in and seen their expressions to the questions (and the answers).
I found the question about where their kilt length to be interesting given a current thread on that topic elsewhere.

Jock,
Thanks to you and the Mrs. for this most interesting post. What great fun! Of course, I compared my answers to those of your friends, except for those questions that reflected issues discussed on this forum, I was surprised at how my answers would have fit in with those of your friends. As was discussed above, this probably reflects the fact that my military background and age are similar to those of some of the men in your group. I do have one question: do you think these gentlemen would "understand" that those of us with a strong Highland heritage wear the kilt to acknowledge that heritage and to honor our forefathers?

Hey Jock. Ya missus left off the most important question of all! How many have ever worn a flat cap with their kilt?
