Earlier this year I bought a traditional safety razor - an Edwin Jagger. Uses a double edged blade, lather up with a boar or badger brush, some decent shaving soap or cream (never that crap from a spray can) and away you go. Takes no longer than a cartridge shave once you are used to it, and is somehow a more satisfying experience.

I've been using soap and brush for about 40 years. Last year I started shaving with my great-grandfather's Frederick Reynolds straight. The picture is before I had it restored.

I'm back and forth between purchasing the Jagger and the Merkur 180.

Either way, you're right. Shaving with a real blade is a much more satisfying experience than either disposable or electric.

It's the whole process, the mug, soap and brush, the feel of real steel, a good after shave creme. For me it doesn't hurt either that I get to use my Great-Great Grandfather's mug to soap up.

I use Fusion blades. They are expensive but last longer than other disposable blades i've used. They also give me the best shave. I shave my head with them and never cut myself even when i've been in a hurry and got kind of reckless with them. Considering I used to pay $10 a month for a haircut, that money now goes to buying blades so price isn't quite as bad.

I'm with Jim (thescot), shave soap and a badger hair brush in the shower with the Gillette Mach 3.

But I didn't like their handles, so I made my own out of Elk antler!

I have been full beard and goatee for over 45 yrs. I used to use a safety razor to trim up but now use a Gillette or Schick disposable. I shave as soon as I step out of the hot shower so I get a close trim and shave on where I am not bearded. I do use an old Norelco elec. to shave my head, have been doing that for years; couldn't stand going bald so just shaved it off. The one thing I do however is use a good moisturizer cream when done. L'Occitane Hand Cream actually. It's good for face and head as well.

I use mug, brush, soap and double edge safety razor similar to the one in the link to the Vermont Country store posted earlier in this thread, that I picked up from the local barber and beauty supply store. The razor blades are 10 for $1.00 and one blade will last me about a month. I was going through those Atra,Fusion etc. blades one cartridge a week and not getting a close shave. And at $15.00 or more for five, I could no longer justify the cost. I also dug out my travel size double edge safety razor from my scouting days and put in in my Dopp kit. There is something to "Everything that is old is new again"

My daily shave is a 1940's Gilette DE I picked up from an antique store for a $1. I buy blades from eBay for $0.50 each.

On weekends I use a straight. My first straight was a brand new DOVO which is my least favourite. My other dozen or so are eBay finds I restored.

Several brushes and too many soaps and creams to count.

I get a better shave than the multiple blade cartridges by shaving properly. I cringe when I see Gilette commercials showing men to shave improperly with benzene and propane laden canned foams.

I seem to be pretty much in tune with Artificer on the weekends or days off when i have the time i have a classic Dovo5/8 that is the best shave outside of the barber shop. But for those quick shower shave and dash days I keep a Gillette fusion around but whenever I shaving i always use my Art of Shaving soap and brush.
