As a girl I wore kilts, and had one of the simple blanket pins - when I first wore it my mother pinned it horizontally at hem level, through both layers, and I knelt on it, it came open and then stabbed me.
That is probably why I have never worn a pin since taking up wearing kilts these last few years, now I think about it.
If the pin is something heavy, delicate or precious I would add my 'vote' for wearing it well above the knee , as it can really hurt to get hit on the kneecap if you need to run, and it could also be detremental to the pin to be hitting against furniture etc. if you were to spin around sharply.

I think The Wizard of BC described the magnets doing that.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Not sure if I'd be classified as a lady or not, but I am female and I do wear sparkly and shiny pins on my kilted skirts.
