Re: Texan Traveling to Europe and need advice. (non kilt related)
I really like the varied advice you have been given, and I think it is balanced well, but, I understand sir, that you are a Texan; as you know, in your state you have good and bad people and areas, it will be no different in that way, but the fellow who mentioned pickpockets is spot on. The thieves of europe are not the face you down and challenge you type. I have only seen them work in Paris, and heard many firsthand stories in amsterdam and Madrid. They are good, so watch them in crowded spots, like exiting a tram. If your money is not in your back pocket you have nothing to fear.
So to reiterate and clarify;
put your wallet in your front pocket.
be aware
have fun, tell them your a Texan, and if they are impressed, ham it up.
drink with the locals and they will love you and protect you.
say 'Probst" for 'cheers'
use local money.
when something is good say; 'YA YA YA!
stash some travellers checks someplace for back up & heavy artillery.
protect your passport like it was shards of the True Cross
Germans are some of the hardest working and hardest drinking people, with a giant heart, and have no time for idiots, once they see you are not a Jerry Springer American, most will show you a very warm welcome, after a few beers.
bring more socks, and less trousers.
go to a swap meet. feel the real culture; lower-rung folks with their hair down.
[I]"--a black mark, disaffected, branded on our hurdies, like folk's names upon their kye! And what can I do? I'm a Stewart, ye see, and must fend for my clan and family. "

Re: Texan Traveling to Europe and need advice. (non kilt related)
`I have been to Germany three times for visits. I have found the people to be warm and hospitable. I did take my kilt on two of the trips. I actually got to wear it in Austria for about 20 minutes. Long enough to get a picture. My wife had fallen and shattered her elbow. But the last time we were at a wedding in the north and I wore my kilt. When we entered the square at the town hall, even the brides ran to take pictures. Wear the Kilt, at least one evening out. But , yes. Be polite and don't be pushy. Relax, It's a beautiful country.

It was my understanding that 112 would work in the US as well as their more usual 911
in Germany you get straight to the police with 110
112 is for emergency (accident, fire, emergency doctor ...), but will also connect to the police if needed.

Re: Texan Traveling to Europe and need advice. (non kilt related)
We lived their a decade ago and just revisited this past summer. We had one carry on each; my wife and three kids. We rented a car for part of the three week trip. We arranged housing through airbnb. Berlin is an easy walking city, Salzburg also. We would have for beer or water in german, but were always given english replies. City transport is easy. We learned to round up a euro or two for tips; not 15-20% like in the states.
