Congratulations! I'm 10.7 years without cigarettes now. One day at a time. I have enjoyed a nice cigar on special occasions though. My dad smoked a pipe until he had to give it up for the life insurance, but I always liked the smell of a nice tobacco. Cigarette tobacco is never nice.

Re: Smoking
I applaud anyone who can give up smoking. It can be difficult but is so worth it for so many reasons.
I gave up for health reasons but even then it still it took me seven years to fully kick the habit. Glad to say I have been smoke free for 22years. My wallet and cardiovascular system and friends are most appreciative.

Re: Smoking
I gave up smoking years ago but I found my Fathers pipe and tried it. It was so good and now I am back smoking again. Damn... but I love it, I love the smell, the packing of the pipe and the relaxing feeling I get.
Like a president of the USA said..."I do not inhale"
I live my life as I want! My Mother is 98 years old last month and she smoked cigarets until she was 95... Go figure! Her mind and body is great and she still tells me what to do...and I listen.
Happy New Year to you all.

Re: Smoking
As a physician, I cannot condone smoking. I have watched far too many people die from it. Very few live to 90 anything. (Including my mother who just passed away before Thanksgiving, in no small part due to her chain smoking addiction) To those who have quit, congratulations! It is quite and accomplishment. [RANT OFF]
Above said, my father smoked a pipe when I was a child. I very fondly remember the (harmless when unlit) smell of his cherry flavored tobacco. Maybe we can just have the wife incorporate it into the potpourri.

Re: Smoking
I have a small humidor that always has a couple boxes of cubans in it. Funny thing is, I smoke them very infrequently. I will have one a month during winter months and perhaps 2 per month during the summer.
I rarely have the hour to put aside for a good smoke and usually smoke them on a drive out to visit my mother, who lives an hour away.

Re: Smoking
Had a bash at pipe smoking years ago but found my life was too hectic and I never had the time to properly enjoy it. I've been smoking rolling tobacco (various brands, British and Dutch mainly) for years because I don't like the dessicated flavour of packaged fags. I smoke about 10 a day but I barely inhale. I don't think I'm addicted to the nicotine as I can go for days without one but I am definitely addicted to the habit. I enjoy the taste more than anything, believe it or not.
Your post got me thinking of the times I have greatly enjoyed pipes in the past so I've just bought a pair of Brier pipes from an online shop in Stuttgart. I'm not sure of the quality of them yet but I'll let you know when they turn up.
Now to find a decent baccy to put in them...

Re: Smoking
I used to smoke a straight stem briar for more years than I can remember. I used to load it with Erinmore mixture and loved it. My pipe when not in use used to be tucked into the top of my kilt hose. I still use the tobacco tins for fishing flies and just occasionally when I open the tin I can snatch a wee whiff of that unforgettable smell.
Sadly a couple of years ago I had a bit of an accident and lost the critical teeth to clench the stem---------so I stopped smoking. Was it difficult to stop? No not really, but I still miss that wonderful aroma of that superb mixture when I opened the tin.

Re: Smoking
I smoked cigarettes from my childhood (yes, really) until my early 20's. One and a half packs of Camels a day... back then they were still expensive but I don't know how people can swing it being twice as much today.
I started smoking cigars frequently (5/week) about 5 years after I had quit smoking cigarettes. The pipe is a very new item purchased for practicality over anything - I work with cigarette smokers, and going outside for a cigar after work (when travelling) means I'm still outside after everyone else has returned indoors. Also, my last trip ended in calamity when 2 of the 3 sticks I had packed for the trip were destroyed in my carry-on. A pipe in my pocket won't suffer the same fate. Finally, cigars are expensive, and there are many times I would love to sit outside, tone-out the rest of the world, sip a scotch and smoke a cigar... but won't because I don't want to deplete my humidor of "the good ones". Good pipe tobacco (and good pipes) aren't cheap, but they still pale in comparison to handrolled cigars.
The pipe is a whole new experience for me. I was hoping for some sort of "proxy cigar" but it really is a whole different beast. It's enjoyable in it's own way... now to determine how I know when a cigar "feels right" or if I'm in the mood for a pipe

Which pipes did you get?
For a start you could try "Gold block". It should be readily available in the UK. Or take a lookout for the Lakelands (Gawith & Hoggarth, Samuel Gawith)
