Re: kilt to prom
As much as it grieves me to help a Campbell (Clan Lamont here ;-)), another tip: make sure that you consider your date's attire as well. A certain amount of coordination between the two will help everyone else see you as a couple, and the evening to go more smoothly.
"My beloved America, thank you for your children. If your children want to become soldiers I will train them. When they are hungry I will feed them. When they are thirsty I will give them water. When they fight for freedom I will lead them. When they are unsteady on the battlefield I will motivate them. If they die on the battlefield I will bury them. So help me God."

Re: kilt to prom
A couple of thoughts from me:
1. No tartan bow tie, get a black self tie one, and learn to tie it. It really is easy to catch on to if you can tie your shoes ;) and it will impress your lass that you went to the trouble.
2. No white kilt hose unless you absolutely love them. A nice coloured pair will look much better.
3. Black argyle jacket and black waistcoat (vest) will do you just fine for prom.
4. Plain black sporran will do fine, fur if you can afford or can borrow one.
5. Polish your shoes well.
6. Obviously leave your sgain dubh at home.
7. Underwear while normally optional should be strongly considered for this outing.
If you would like to post a photo here of your kit as it stands at this time, I'm sure we'd all give you some good pointers and encouragement. And lastly have fun!

Re: kilt to prom
I wish there was a guy who wanted to wear a kilt to my prom when I was in high school I would have been his date JUST for that! There was a guy at my school who was ultra-scottish (he was a Baird) and I had a huge crush on him for like a year just cause I knew he had Scottish genes. If he would have shown up in a kilt to prom, I probably would have just asked him to marry me

Re: kilt to prom
Donald, congratulations for deciding to wear the kilt to the prom. I would not wear the belted plaid unless your date is wearing a gown made of duct tape or some other bizarre outfit. The advice you're getting is spot on. Enjoy yourself and let us see the results.

Re: kilt to prom
I wore a kilt to both my junior high and high school proms in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. No permission was either asked for or needed, but I suppose different school districts, principals, etc might not be as inclusive. Mine was the only kilt the first time and my buddy kilted up with me at our high school prom. I cobbled the outfits together by borrowing from friends and family... not my finest kilted moments but I had a great response from the other students, our teachers, and the parents.
Xmarks is a great resource and one of the best things is the availability of pictures that don't come out of a rental catalogue. Check out these two threads for some ideas:

Re: kilt to prom - one geezer's hints
I have never been to a prom, much less YOUR prom, but I have been to a lot of kilted dances. My experience is that the outfit with the least amount of stuff hanging off - the fewest things to keep up with- that is the best outfit. Those guys with hats and canes will look cool at first, but they are going to have to keep track of those accessories all night long- or lose them. If you can get your hands on a backless vest, it will be more comfortable.
Make sure your sporran and your sporran strap are dance-worthy. Be sure to minimize the things you have in your pockets- carry a bare minimum in your wallet, on your keyring, etc., but leave plenty of room to tote whatever your date expects you to.
I would go ahead and get some fun underwear because SOMEBODY is going to expose it. Just make sure it is modest.

Re: kilt to prom
That reminds me - consider wearing some sort of a travel vest with pockets for your stuff rather than a sporran, then you don't have to keep moving it out of the way to dance close.
Or some of those "hide it from pickpockets" rigs you can get at big box stores or on line.
Think they have shoulder holster like pouches to hide stuff from pickpockets - point is, ditch the sporran for the dance.

Re: kilt to prom
i would suggest a nice black kilt jacket, either prince charlie or argyle. it sounds like you have everything below the waist already in place. i would for sure post some pictures of what you plan on wearing before you actually go. the fine rabble here with help and make sure you look like a fine Scottish gentleman, don't want to run into any embarrassing dress mistakes (ie backwards kilt, kilt to low, short socks, purse instead of sporran, etc..) but ti sounds like you already have some kilted experience so you should have most rookie mistakes covered already. anyways the mot important thing is to have fun, and remember to not give the kilt a bad reputation... don't go flashing your teachers or anything like that!
for a good thread of kilts to prom check out this thread by Mark's Mom from a while back
(hope i didn't come off sounding to strong here, I'm sure you know what your doing.)

If you really prefer the appearance of a kilt with the sporran, as I do, it is still possible to dance close. Just slide the sporran, strap and all around to the side while dancing. Try it out and go what works for you. Dancing close is MUCH to much fun to have a sporran get in the way.

Re: kilt to prom
I like your style. I wore my 8 yard MacDougall tartan to my senior prom last April in 2011. I was voted best dressed. I wore a black Argyll, a matching 5 button waist coat, a white tuxedo shirt, black silk tie, a semi-formal hunting sporran, dark green hose (to compliment the green in my kilt), traditional black brogues and a tie pin that belonged to my grandfather. And no belt, due to it bunches up the waistcoat. My date's dress was a dark metallic teal. She wanted me to wear the kilt and didn't care about matching. Ask your date about that first off, so you can figure it out. The bow tie vs. straight tie was personal opinion over tradition.
Hope this helps. I guarantee you'll be happy you wore it. Oh, and wear black underwear so if anyone checks, they can't see in the shadows.
What will be, will be.
