I've been reading along with this topic all day. What have I learned? If I want to have my own forge, instead of just doing it in my backyard I should find a random flat spot in the woods somewhere!

a bottle of propane and a ton of fittings from the local Atwoods and you can get your crazy step-father involved in all kinds of shenanigans in your mom's back yard too
If you're interested in it yourself and don't want to go the coal route, just Google around for venturi forge burner and you'll find more ways to blow yourself up than you can ever imagine.

It's actually something I've contemplated doing, but feel like I should probably get back in better shape before attempting so as to not kill myself.
Back on the topic of Tyger and Ryan: the buckle and kilt pin (both by Tyger) I picked up at the STM back in mid-December are both great...I had actually been strongly considering ordering from him, then when I saw his work was offered at the museum I couldn't resist any longer.
I plan to order one of Ryan's bonnets very soon; pretty much the only reason I've not done so yet is I can't decide on a color.

Thanks for your puchase at the Scottish Tartans Museum Gift Shop. I must bring them more buckles, the stock is low.
Yes, you must get one of Ryans bonnets. Now, I have to tell you, this one that he most recently made for me is the kind of thing that you pretty much have to hold in your hands to appreciate. Photographs are OK, but the true feel of his work can only be appreciated by the signals that are sent from your fingers and hands to your brain. No kidding. Contrary to casual belief, you feel with your brain.

Naw, you should build wherever you want to build! Man, there are the coolest shops where guys hang out and visit their buddy who builds bamboo rods, or whatever. I just want a place where nobody hangs out but me. Once I get my fill of that, I might change the whole deal.
