Re: what do I DO with it?? (pipers' plaid)

Interesting mystery! Beautiful item. I would enjoy it but be mindful of its value to you. I have a nice scarf - not quite a plaid - of my grandfather. I use it all during the cold months and regardless of if I am kilted or not or if it might conflict.

The obvious thing to do is to get yourself a MacKenzie kilt....

So, now (it appears) I have an antique pipers' plaid, MacKenzie tartan (ala Seaforth Highlanders). Why would my great-grandfather (Bruce, MacDonald) have this?
Any chance he was in the Seaforth Highlanders?

If not, then maybe he had a friend or relation who was. Or maybe he just got a good deal on it.

It's a wonderful family treasure. Don't make it into anything it was/is not. We have a lovely old, moth-eaten blanket plaid that I am so thankful was not destroyed two (or three?) generations ago, but kept for just what it is. Today it's draped over an old high-back chair and sometimes becomes the subject for conversation. It's Mackenzie, too, and perhaps left behind by one of them who came to visit in the 19C Who knows? but we delight in the fact that it is here and can be touched.
