    Re: Utilikilts worn formally?

Lack pictures but I have mockers in 5 colors - Black, Heather grey, Thunder grey (light), Cream and Olive.
I pick the kilt to go with the top and and hose. And fit right in in churchs, weddings and other formal events.
I think I have converted more guys to kilts all dolled up this way than my normal casual to total slob ( after dirty work) regalia, Utilikilt, semi's or traditional.

A lot of John Q public like the advantages and look of kilts but don't seem to care for or be able to afford the rest of the full of traditional garb. The cost of the kilt itself gets minor compared to the rest. A lot off guys tend to automatically think tartans are formal and require the rest - go figure.

One question that's been bugging me about contemporary kilt-wearing (specifically the utilitarian types) is: can / should one wear a sporran with it? I'll admit it - I'm a big fan of the sporran, and not much for the addition of external cargo pockets to the utilitarian-style kilt.

    What's the general consensus?

I think if the kilt has pockets, especially big cargo pockets on the side, then a sporran is redundant and looks out of place. If there are no pockets, then a sporran might be necessary. If there are side slash pockets and/or rear pockets, I could see it go either way.

The sporran is a traditional and practical accessory. I think it would work better with contemporary kilts that are cut more like a traditional kilt i.e. a Freedom Kilt or a Buzz Kidder.

My personal opinion is that it really depends on which sporran and which contemporary kilt combination we're talking about. One of those Stillwater nylon cargo sporrans might look OK with a particular style modern kilt, where a traditional dress sporran (for example) would look pretty strange with a UK Workman. To me, it's all about the combination of styles. There is no one single answer, except to say "it depends - I'd have to see it".

Personally, instead of a sporran, I wear a small black $10 jansport nylon fanny pack, slung around the front (like a sporran). Then again, my contemporary kilts don't have pockets.

Tobus and Alan - funny - I was using my Jansport before I got a Rob Roy with the traditionals, then I served for dog cookies and stuff on our walks.
Jerry has more NightStalkers in ( I was on his waiting list) and I got one last week. It has taken over the dog duty and regular casual duty. Digging change out at Walmart this morning, dog treats mixed in with change, gal thought it was funny when I asked if they take treats too.

OT again This one would go with anything shy of full formal.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.
