When I spoke to him on the phone Saturday or Sunday he said that he'd spent $300 on the kilt and had worn it previously (I'm not sure if that was previously to a school event), he didnt as yet have a prince charlie, but was working on it.

I did verify that he wasn't planning on turning up like Mel Gibson in Braveheart, and he did mention that he had been asked the same question by the principal.

Haven't heard anything about the school board meeting yet

But that very reliable source the daily mail (uk) reports...

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...=feeds-newsxml

Which doesnt really agree with the st louis post and dispatch...

    http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/m...38936758e.html

    Curious...

I do note that the post on the Missouri Tartan Days facebook page has been removed too...

A copy paste of a guy that was there:

I was not able to get my kilt after work, but did address the Board only to have the Superintendent read the decision of the board. They were upholding a student handbook policy that I had not read. They said that the kilt and accouterments were not traditional attire for that event. I tried to use the “it’s a learning opportunity for the students to be exposed to another culture angle. I will say this much for the young man: he accepted the decision of the board with more grace and bearing than I would have suspected for high school student. His remarks began with an apology to the board and the faculty of the High School for the uncivil emails they had received. He argued well from a point of view that it was traditional, in a broader sense than just the school’s events. I was encouraged by his speech that perhaps there are some that come out of the public school system with the ability to think for themselves and be articulate about what they think. While I believe the decision made by the board is wrong on many levels, I applaud Will’s acquiescence to the decision of duly elected authority, having run through the machinations of appeal given him. He well represented his Scottish heritage.

    And an other comment:

i know this kid. it’s not because he’s scottish he is making a JOKE!!! he has no respect for authority. maybe that’s why none of our school officials are taking it seriously. he needs to grow up and learn that maybe if he wouldnt play around people would take him seriously!!!

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

    Dear Mr. Greenwald,

I was rather saddened to read that your school is discriminating against my country's national dress being worn to a school prom in the mistaken belief that it is unmanly or inappropriate. I would like to remind you of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the kilted Scottish regiments of the British and Commonwealth Armies in support of the United States military operations over recent years.

I was born and brought up in Scotland, and very well educated there both in academics and appropriate 'honest manliness' before meeting my American wife at the University of Glasgow (est. 1451) and immigrating to the United States of which I have since become a citizen. I am prepared to put this sorry episode down to a lack of cultural awareness on the part of your school's management, and hope you will rectify the situation forthwith.

I have taught in Massachusetts (Middle School History) and have with the permission of my school's management worn my kilt with appropriate day attire to teach my students on days dedicated to the various cultural backgrounds represented among the school population (faculty, staff, and pupils).

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

    Thank you in advance,

    Peter L. Crowe, M.A. (Hons.), LL.M.

That would indeed be some of that dry British wit... Of course the fact that they appear to have reported the incorrect information... Gotta love fact checking huh..

I don't understand how they can print stories like that.
It's not even like they somehow got the facts wrong, they just seemed to have made up their own conclusion for the story.
Another reason why I stay clear of that particular newspaper!

If I had to take a guess... I'd say they read the Post and Dispatch story with its confusing last paragraph that gets read as "the school board changed its mind and gave him an apology"... Which sadly refers to a different case in 2005... Only problem with my theory is that when I looked at the timestamps this morning, the daily mail looked to have published first...

Just more bad press for the Land of Lincoln... Now if the president was a minority and from the state... Oh wait a minute... Well if it was an election year... Sheesh! I give up...
