Thank you, ladies & gents... I was listening to the radio before I wrote my original post and the DJ was going on about how his wife was making him go to the movie with her, and was encouraging others who were in a similar spot to call in and talk about it... And they were going to stage a "man-protest" by walking out mid-film if it sucked, and were going to watch NHL hockey highlights on his smartphone from the lobby in lieu...
By that grim description it sounded like some kind of mega-chick-flick, but based on what people in this thread are saying, that doesn't really seem to be the case.
Maybe I should give the books a try if I find some time.

My fiance disappeared for three to four days as she read through the books. She couldn't put those things down. She loved the books. I didn't read them. I went to the movies with one other person that hadn't read the books and four people that had. They all said there was a lot of stuff left out of the books. I enjoyed the movie for what it was, an action movie with a setting riddled with social commentary.
I would recommend the movie to anyone. And, having talked with my sweetheart about the differences between the books and the movie, I'd recommend the books to anyone as well.

To quote my brother-in-law who has worked for years as a head librarian and has been asked to write review for several books "If there has ever been a book that could be great but basically be written to be a screenplay this is it." I am currently on the waiting list at my local library for the book and refuse to see the movie before reading it so that is all I can add.

Went to see the movie Saturday with my son-in-law. We are both Scifi fans and movie goers. He hadn't read the book, I have. We both thought it was a very good movie. *** on it being a better movie for a young woman than the "Twilight" stuff. I love tough, smart heroines. Come to think of it, I married the toughest, smartest woman I know - that fact that she's pretty and thinks I sexy is on top of that.

I have read the first book and am almost through with the second. My wife has read all three. We are certainly not the age group they are directed to as we are both "senior citizens", but we ain't "old". The books are fast-paced and uniformly action-packed. I think the fast pacing is what made it easy for me to get through the first two as I rarely read fiction. We also saw the movie on opening weekend and thought it was very good but not quite violent enough to be a true recreation of the book. Even so, we look forward to installment two. Of real interest to us is the fact that the opening scenes were filmed less than three miles from where I sit writing this. Shelby, NC has now become "District 12".

I saw the movie, thought it presented a shallow plot and redundant take on totalitarianism. I haven't read the books yet, may do that in the future.

I read the books a couple of years ago on the recommendation of my wife. I thought it was a basic story with a shallow plot and was quite bored with it barely after starting the third one. I struggled to finish it.
We both saw the film and whilst we enjoyed it, I think it helped that we had read the books beforehand. i just hope they can add a bit of suspense into the third film as it was sooo obvious and inevitable!

I wanted to read the books first as a friend recommended, but haven't had a chance to get to a bookstore yet; so yesterday I broke down and saw it anyway.
Now I am REALLY determined to get the books.
I also like this interview about the movie with "arch-villain" Donald Sutherland:
