51st Annual Scottish Gathering and Highland Games Salado, TX
well it is about time for the 51st Annual Scottish Gathering and Highland Games in Salado, TX. This will be November 9th, 10th, and 11th
Who all might be going?
I already have my camp site reserved at the lake outside of town

We'll be there, as usual. Note that the location of the games has changed this year. Instead of downtown at the Civic Center, the games will be at a sports complex behind the Holiday Inn on the outskirts of Salado (Exit 286 off of I-35).
Apparently, the City of Salado decided that they wanted a cut of the vendor's take. The organizer's disagreed and moved the games outside the city limit! That'll teach 'em!
See you there.

The vendors and concessionaires go with the games... My point was that the whole shebang will be in a new location this year.

We'll be there too. Heard about the move and warned the president of museum society that many of the women appreciated the real bathrooms at the civic center. Last I heard he was going to try to get the keys to restrooms at the sports complex instead of just port-a-johns.
Maybe I'll save some money since my wife can't just walk out to the shopping

Well, let's see. While the lack of shade is horrible, there should be ample parking, people will not want to move their vehicles once they find a parking place, the location is not within walking distance of any of Salado's shops or eateries, and when it's time to leave drivers can just zip right back on the convenient entrance ramp to I-35 instead of poking through town.
I think that the city fathers will eventually have an influx of merchants and restaurant owners voicing their displeasure over the lack of Highland Games visitors walking (and purchasing) their way through the streets of Salado. Having been hit with their hefty "special events additional tax" last year on B&B accommodations within the city limits, I don't have a lot of sympathy.

Just a reminder to everyone that this is coming up in a few weeks! We'll be coming in on Friday evening, and should be attending the Calling of the Clans that evening. I'll definitely be at the Games on Saturday and the Tattoo on Saturday night... possibly back at the Games Sunday morning as well. We're staying at the Holiday Inn Express right in front of the sports complex, so that should be very convenient.
We scoped out the sports complex a couple of months ago as we were driving through Salado, and I agree with the others. It's got plenty of room for the event and parking should be better than in town, but it's going to be pretty sunny out there with no shade. Do you think they'll do the actual Games right there in the baseball diamond so the spectators can sit in the bleachers?
I also don't see how they can do the parade. I guess they'll just have to settle for an abbreviated grand entrance instead of being able to come down Main Street.
Since this is the first time we'll be staying the weekend in Salado instead of driving in for the day, I'm not sure what the town has to offer in the way of restaurants. I've heard it's pretty sparse. Any suggestions on decent-quality restaurants in the area?
Let's hear a final roll call on who is going to be there, and set up a time/place for a XMTS meetup!

My plans are to be there on Saturday. As the date gets closer and I learn more about the activities (and my obligations at home) I can be more specific.
