Absolutely outstanding! I've never felt the need for a dirk, until now. But seeing that beauty really stirs up a bad case of G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome).
Spent this evening finish sanding the handle carvings. I've made all the modifications to the blade and I've got all my templates laid out for the etchings and this Sunday afternoon I'm going to get after it! I've tried to capture the "fire" that draws me to this wood in these pictures. Should have some more photos very soon!
Well.. I see something has obviously been changed with the photo attachment setup.. I can click them and see them so I hope you can too

I've etched the design I wanted onto the blade. Unfortunately I made the batch WAY too hot and it ate through my asphalt resist pretty quickly so it's a bit light. I muddled up the hardware a bit so it wasn't so shiny for the faire this weekend (going as picts for something different). Next step is finishing the sheath. Found a nice piece of buffalo hide similar to the body of my sporran that I think will work quite nicely. I'm moving to Seattle in the next couple of weeks so it will be a while. Thanks for looking!

That is some truly impressive work, I think you've created an heirloom piece there. And a good story to go with it, combining a duck and a chinese dirk to make pure awesomeness.

I must agree on both counts. Astonishingly beautiful work. (and this after in another thread I'd disparaged the need for a dirk) The blade etching in particular is unbelievably attractive. Thank you for the excellent photo essay and keep up the good work.

It's nice to finish up a project. I have so many that sit idle waiting for one thing or another that I feel like I'll never be done with. So after looking at the sheath that the Hanwei came with, I decided there was enough salvageable leather even after cutting the threading out and taking nearly an inch out of the seam. Here's what I came up with! IMG_1182.jpgIMG_1177.jpgIMG_1179.jpgIMG_1181.jpg
I stretched the throat of the sheath over the guard of the knife and in the process scratched the $#!% out of it.. sad but it will clean up. It fits remarkably well with an audible click when it's seated.. and it's not coming out on accident for certain. I know it's really rough but it's exactly what I wanted. I wear things of this nature mostly at renaissance festivals and reenactment events with a small circle of close friends so I'm going for period*ish*. I've learned from my tinkering that you should always leave a way to repair something you plan to beat the heck out of.. serviceability is key!
Got a few more projects on the burner.. I'll give you a preview IMG_0721.jpg the antagonist IMG_0718.jpg P.S. those exacto knives are sharp.. no joke IMG_0885.jpg A few of the torc heads I've been making for casting IMG_0890.jpg 32 feet of 12 gauge copper and brass
Now to build a several hundred dollar foundry system.. aye yie yie.. Maybe one of these days I'll finish that project..
