    Agree. I'll probably end up with a modern pack in a subdued color for most of my hiking, and an inexpensive "traditional" canvas pack for the times when I can afford to trade function for style.

    Trading function for style when it could be critical fails the "how dumb would I feel explaining this afterwards" test.

    The leather packs look great, but I'd rather put the money toward another kilt.....

    I second the comment by Tobus. I have a lightweight day pack from Eagle Creek. It is made from space-age polymers (plastic) and has four pockets, ... and can easily carry a case of beer. Usually though, I don't carry more than a couple of six packs.
    I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

    BTW, you can't see it in the photo but that L.L. Bean day pack has "modern" meshed padding on the side against your back, as well as a waist belt which can be tucked out of sight.
