I'm relatively new to the tartan design game - what's a "border check"?

Someone else may know the entire history, but...
It is smaller black-and-white check tartan, indicative of untreated sheeps wool (both "white" & "black"). The height of its popularity was the early to mid 18th Century, coinciding with the influence of Sir Walter Scott's writing & wearing. Traditionally it's limited to the Border Region as, historically, few Border families had "named" tartans.
Familially, we always called it Shepherd's Plaid.
Re: the design, so far I'm the only one who referenced "Border check". I wouldn't worry about that being on the front of any critique. I can be goofy that way.

No worries. My family story puts us as from the Outer Hebrides anyway (hence the surname), which is about as far from the Scottish Marches as you can get!

Pink is just light red. White, on the other hand, is hard on the eyes.

I'm guessing you'd have the pleats bringing forward the pink stripe on the green which would minimize the white in the back.

Interesting. Another disappearing post.
To repeat:
My go at your idea with a consideration for pleating options...

Notes to fledgling tartan designers:
1. 240-340 threads including all pivots will yield a tartan about 6-8.5", ideal for kilt pleating
2. Pivot points (and all pleats ideally) should have a clearly identifiable block of at least 32 threads or about 3/4"
3. Central stripes larger than 12 threads will overly dominate the fell.
Break these 'rules' as you need to. I'm sure there are other considerations.

Beware being too dogmatic especially without clarification.

2. Pivot points (and all pleats ideally) should have a clearly identifiable block of at least 32 threads or about 3/4" - dion't confuse pivot and pleat. If one worked on a minimum of a 32 pivot count then many traditional tartans; Black Watch, MacDonald, MacDougall, Gunn, Royal Stewart etc, etc would not comply with the 'rule'.
3. Central stripes larger than 12 threads will overly dominate the fell. Not sure what you mean by the fell but there are numerous traditional patterns that don't follow this concept: MacAlasdair, MacColl, MacDonald of Sleat, Menzies, Sinclair to name but a few.
