Easy to make tweed bonnet from circa 1956 tweed fabric
Not the best photo, but the Houndstooth Tweed flat cap I bought in Scotland.
So wear what you like. In the very cold weather Ive even got a Russian fur hat, a Mad Bomber fur lined bomber hat and various wool pullover hats but I prefer the bonnet or flat cap. Of course they come off when I enter the pub or other buildings.
Would you care to share the pattern or the source for the bonnet? That looks pretty sharp!!!
And I have an old jacket that is too large that can be repurposed nicely.

I was referred to this pdf file by a gentleman on XMarks so I will pass it on. Fairly easy to make so hope you enjoy.

Looks a lot easier than the balmoral pattern I was looking into!

Mine is just 2 inches wider than the head diameter and seems to fit quite well. I only used 1/2 inch seam allowance and once I turned everything right side out I pressed the seams. Seems to hold shape better after doing this. Enjoy and have fun.

Having served 9 years in the USArmy, I tend to find myself looking for some sort of regulation or governing body to help me stay within the appropriate boundaries when the Wear and Appearance of a special outfit or garment are concerned. At the same time, the wearing of a kilt when not at a Scottish event should be open to personal expression. I think the two men pictured in the original post look very smart and handsome in their choice of headgear, traditional or not.
What I see here on XMTS is a group of gentlemen who don't just wear a kilt without consideration for the overall appearance and image they project. I see gentlemen who give consideration to how the kilt is worn and what is worn with it, a sense of honor and integrity if you will, in how they look. I see polished shoes, clean hose or socks, shirts tucked in, belts worn, faces shaved or beards trimmed; Gentlemen who take pride in their appearance. It's one of the things that convinced me to join XMTS.
I say wear what you like and what you think looks best knowing that the world is watching us. Too much for a Newbie?

I think a "El Bandito" sombrero or a ten galllon cowboy hat would probably look out of place, (really??) but I think a military beret would look pretty good with a clan badge. But then I'm a heathen from t'other side ae the worrrld. (Even if my name is McGregor)

As far as traditional Highland civilian dress (THCD) goes, skip the tweed flat cap and get a Balmoral. If you aren't trying to be traditional, then go for it.
