The good news is that although you shouldn't wear it, you don't like the colour anyway and from a collector of royal ephemera you should get a good price. Sell it and IMHO have a kilt made in one of the Robertson tartans!

There is one thing I don't understand. On one hand the tartans authority restricts the usage of the tartan and on the other hand they write: "The one tartan which cannot be worn by anyone unless the Queen's permission has been granted is the Balmoral."
Then I guess you might find someone who pays more than you would pay for a new one.
Anyway enjoy the Sheriffmuir.

A possible explanation occurs to me. The King George VI tartan (STA 5845) is very similar to the Princess Mary tartan (STA 5449), which is associated with the Royal Family but is in regular unrestricted production. Both have been known as Green Stewart and differ only in the size of the white stripe.
It may be possible that the tartan was misrepresented by the seller on ebay through ignorance. However, against this is the point that the Princess Mary is associated more with women's items. Without a clear close sighting of the tartan we are taking the word of the seller.

Since the 'King George VI' tartan was available as yardage or finished kilts from the first two vendors I checked, it doesn't seem like it's all that excusive...

I too, have seen these 'claims'. Try it, order one............you will not receive your order for reasons already stated.
I live in Nottingham. I drive through Sherwood Forest every day. I see nothing but trees and wild deer. I have seen photos on this site of 'Sherwood Forest' - more like 'Hollywood Forest' - but I don't denegrate or complain.............

Wow, I didn't "denegrate or complain" just reported my findings on the subject at hand. Honestly I couldn't care less about if you can order the tartan or not. Now running down my favorite renfaire, that seemed a little like denegration... and way off topic for this thread as as well...

Write back telling them that you've checked and its actually a Green Stewart tartan, hence you'll be asking the permission of Franz, Duke of Bavaria for permission as the appropriate authority on Stewart Tartans. I doubt they would reply.
Just wear it for heaven's sake. Or sell it. But don't treat it as sacrosanct. If it belonged to a private citizen who spent time and expense getting their own tartan for "ready identification" then maybe not but consider for a moment who funded the creation of this tartan. George VI probably get this as a freebie as part of the kickback for granting Wm Anderson a royal warrant. Even if money did change hands it would likely have been the hard-earned tax of your family. King George VI didn't pay tax (as he had no earnings, he lived on state benefits by another name). Of course her maj can keep the tartan if she wants to fork out for all the income tax which she and her progenitors didn't pay for a few hundred years.
Don't you think you hold a stake in it now? It's yours in more ways than one.

There is another "Green Stewart" - Stewart (King George the VI) or Stewart, Green
STA 5253:
http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=3930
http://www.tartansauthority.com/tart...src=2&key=5253
It contains a red stripe on the green ground. This is the sett which Dalgliesh offers.
It is different than both the Princess Mary #2 & King George the VI (Green Stewart).
Although classed in both the Scottish Register of Tartans & The Scottish Tartan Authority as "Royal", they denote no restrictions.
