Richard,
Yes, it is amazing how wearing a jacket can make you look much bigger, and a waistcoat even more so. If wearing a waistcoat I like the three button type. I think that the higher up your waistcoat closes the bigger you look. Here are two photos of myself, one wearing just a shirt, and the other wearing a jacket with waistcoat.

I agree the Argyll is the most versatile, but as a very broad chap (56 chest), I feel I can still pull off a PC although for very formal I go to my regulation doublet with all its extra buttons and skirts. The most important thing for any jacket is always getting the right size, length included. Normally, if I buy a ready made jacket I need to get the arms altered but it's worth it to get good coverage near the waist.
This evening as I stood outside my local, a young guy strode past wearing a Prince Charlie with a 5 button waistcoat and it looked good (bit more modern), so I'll be giving that a shot tomorrow evening maybe instead of the usual 3 button and bow tie since it gives the option of a longer tie or a ruche.
So PC or Argyll? Probably depends more on what kind of event you attend more commonly, but best to try one of each on if you can then decide.

But in England does it look like a "costume" to people?
Oh is this the place?

Strange that they spelled it "Western Ware"... I've never seen that phrase, and what would it mean? Spoons and plates and cups with Cowboy designs on them comes to mind.
Anyhow we call the clothing "Western wear" and it would be called a "Western wear store" here.
Other wares, that is, saddles and bridles and the like, we would call "tack".

Just a heads-up, there are quite a few in different colours and sizes recently put up on Ebay, I think they're ex-hire

I bought all my jackets, Prince Charlie, black Argyll, tweed Argyll used on Ebay from Scottish hire shops. Great quality at low price.
Altenberg Bagpiper, I love that Seaforth Highlanders stuff! We used to have a pipe band here called Cabar Feidh which was founded by ex-Seaforths and wore the Seaforth uniform.

wouldn't say it's like a costume. Jeans shirt and boots always popular, we don't think all Americans are cowboys, like you don't thin all english men wear pinstripes suits, bowler hats and carry an umbrella. Admittedly I would lie a bowler hat to wear with my kilt. I do like headwear
