Good point Bubba, hadn't thought of that. Most in Pipe bands wouldn't worry about issues like that when the kilt kit only sees the light of day a half a dozen times a year.
For us who wear a kilt more often I guess chain-wear becomes an issue!

It certainly can be an issue, Graham, and I cannot think how many times I have stressed this on various forums, such as this one, over the years. Every time, I am laughed off the stage for making this point, but one of these days these guys will be laughing on the other sides of their faces. I have seen horrendous damage to expensive kilts caused by the wearer's insistence on using sporran chains instead of straps.
The only occasions I will wear a chain is when wearing my heavy silver and sealskin formal Evening Dress Sporran. A silver chain with Evening Dress is as traditional as a Sgian Dubh!

Sporran by necessity
When my brother and I first went oot & aboot kilted, he coined a phrase new to me.
When a notable member of the fairer sex crossed our path (at Baylor U. in Texas, they are numerous), he referred to her as a "kilt lifter."
At our store in Northern California, we have a few like that each day. That's why I wear a sporran.
The 'Urban Fanny' pack from Arc'teryx makes a good 'sport' sporran: http://www.arcteryx.com/noflash/acce...cessories.html
I chose it because the buckle is on the side of the bag, instead of middle of my back (annoying when driving).
It adjusts quickly for high or low ride, the zipper is easy and there's a flat pocket just right for my Pocket Briefcase wallet. It did start to wear a bit on the nylon of my Mtn Kilt, though, after every day wear of about a month.
I'm not sure if wear is completely avoidable, really, no matter what the materials are.

I would never laugh at any of the suggestions you make. If anyone knows anything about kilt and accessories it would be the likes of you and Robbie who have had years of experience.
So - I intend to use a strap instead of a chain for casual wear. Question - where do I get one from? I've trawled the net and made a few phone calls but can't find one. Will I have to improvise or do you know some secret place where they are sold. Do tell before my kilt ends up shredded!!

Al,
Phone Laura at McCalman Kilts. She sells them. That is where I got mine from when I bought my kilt from her.

Any kiltmaker/Highland Dress supplier/sporran maker will have them Al. Where'ere you see a sporran for sale, there also shall ye find the sporran straps! In fact, I do not believe I was ever offered a 'chain strap' with any of the sporrans I have - except the Dress one, of course.
Be aware, in case you are making the purchase by Mail Order, that you need the strap to be longer than you waist belt, because of the angle with which it hangs.
Another point, try to get the strap in the same leather, certainly the same colour leather, as your existing sporran.

Al,
Am I right in thinking that you only have the one sporran? If so, it is perhaps a little on the formal side for casual wear. While you are getting a leather sporran strap, how about treating yourself to a leather day sporran at the same time? McCalman Kilts (see my post above) do a good range of informal (day) sporrans and leather sporran straps.
Just a suggestion.

I don't feel comfortable in a kilt without a sporran. I find that the sporran is necssary to cover up any unsightly protruberances from my "manhood"!!

I cannot stand "fanny packs". I just really do not like them. I much prefer a casual leather sporran, or a day sporran. It just suits the overage image I am going for better. I couldn't imagine paying $100+ for a kilt, only to add a $10 fanny pack to top it off. Just my personal opinion. It could also be that my mother-in-law is never without hers.

Mini Sporrans?
I have a black leather daywear sporran, but it's just too big for actual use everyday. If I could find a smaller brown leather pouch with the low profile and efficient space of my urban fanny, I'd be very interested.
Too many sites sell small brown fanny packs. Even so, my search for such has been frootless so fur.
