I have never owned a pair of said hose , consequently I have never worn a sgian on the outside, it was just not a style that attracted me. But my uncles certainly did and as I carry one of my uncles' sgian(his only one) I can say that the sheath has no clip or special wire attached to it. From that aspect, it is as any other sgian sheath that I have ever seen. Like many things in my life I paid little attention to the knot--I should have--- and any "in the know" tricks to hold the thing safely in place are gone. It all looked pretty precarious to me. Still it must have worked alright, otherwise I would not have it now!

Does anyone know where I could obtain a pattern for square topped castellated hose? The pattern in Veronica Gainsford's Knitting Kilt Hose & Knickerbocker Stockings is for pointed tops.

I like them. They are unusual but I really like them.

I think you could follow Gainsford's pattern, except for the deceases, and bind off every other point. In other words, if your sock ends up being 72 sts at the cuff, you'd divide 72 into an even number (8X9, 6X12, 4X18) and figure out which would make the best-looking castle. I think 12 castles of 6 sts would look nice.
    Rnd 1 of castles: *K6, BO6*.
Rnd 2: K6, turn, with DPN pick up 6 sts at base of just-worked sts. Divide these 12 sts on to 3 DPNs.
Rnd 3: Join 6 knitted sts and 6 picked-up sts into round. Knit around for 6 rnds. Graft (Kitchener stitch) closed. Cut yarn. Weave end in. Attach yarn to next set of 6 sts and repeat Rnd 2.

I've never tried this pattern, but it should work. The knitted-in-the-round castles should stand up nice and proud and not curl they way they would if a careless knitter had simply knitted them flat and hoped for the best.

Sounds similar to approach I was considering. Using a circular needle cast on five stitches and kit five rows leave a 3 inch tail and cut yarn, cast on five stitches and kit five rows leave 3 inch tail. Repeat until you have enough parapets. Return to the first parapet knit five stitches, cast on five stitches (working in tail or weave in later), repeat until all parapets are worked and all tails are worked in, join round and knit body of hose.

This would also allow every other parapet to be a different color.
