I enjoy a good single malt scotch, beer, a well made martini (shaken, not stirred) and real German or Austrian schnapps (which you can't get in Canada).
I also have a wine cellar that currently consists of about 300 bottles of red wine, and a few bottles of champagne and vintage port.
I will have an occasional pint or glass of wine on a weeknight to unwind or with dinner. On the weekends my wife and I enjoy cooking and its a must to have a bottle of wine open while working in the kitchen.
I enjoy sitting in front of the fireplace on a cold Canadian winter night with a full bodied Islay malt.
In the summer time I have a house rule that you cannot be within 100 ft of the BBQ without a cold beer in your hand.
To me, different kinds of alcohol were made to be enjoyed and to delight the senses (not necessarily to get drunk).

That is some drinking logic your friend has there bubba. I have to admit that I don't really drink heavily that often. I am a 2 pint pub social drinker with friend most of the time. But come Kilt Night or any other event where I am out for the night I get into it pretty good. Usually no more than once a month. I have learned over time where my limit is and I try to stay within that limit. It just hurts to much the next day if I go way over board.
I am acually pertty good with the booze considering I am a Sailor. Not to stereotype the people in my line of work, but we do have a big number of drinkers in the occupation. I have seen how abuse of a substains can distroy a Man, so I make sure it never gets ahold of me. As Men we choose the path we walk and we control where we end up, not anyone else!
Andrew makes it sound like the big sailor that can party his butt off. He is for kilts night, but when we meet during the week Andrew is the person most likely to have one pint and switch to water. Mind you we usually meet near my place, so I can walk whereas he has to drive.
I find myself drinking less and less these days. I have two young children that wake up at 7am (latest) and don't care if I tied one on the night before. So I have been going fairly easy even at kiltsnight (with the exception of the last one).

Never touched the stuff
Aside from being underage, I've never touched or have had a desire to partake of alcoholic beverages. I'll take a nice ginger ale over a stout any day-and plan to the rest of my life.

I felt kind of bad, because I brought the course of conversation away from the original topic on another forum.
Then I looked here and saw that in a forum where the original topic is whether there are other non-drinkers in kilts, it has become a discussion on what kinds of drinks people enjoy.
Now I don't feel so bad.
Anyway, you can count me among the ranks of the kilted non-drinkers, or the non-drinking kilted. I have seen too much of what alchohol does to people to have any interest in it.
I'm actually a little surprised there aren't more of us. It takes a lot of self-confidence and not caring what other people think to remain a non-drinker. Just as it takes a lot of self-confidence and not caring what other people think to wear a kilt. (at least in the US)

I am actually suprised at the number of non-drinkers here.
I have no problem with it what so ever though. I have my moral stance that keeps me from indulging, but the fact is I like beer and and a few other spirits.
I can also understand the non-drinking position and have absolute respect for it. I have also seen the effects of excess.
(In college people always wanted to party with me b/c they knew I could always drive them home!)

I like a drink now and then but not too much. The most I have is maybe 3 drinks in an evening. Quite enough for me. I drink on occasions as a rule and not every day or even every month. I saw what routine drinking did to my grandfather and that ain't happening to me.

Good, more stout for me.(just kiddin you)
Anyhow, I think that as long as you dont go overboard with anything, it's ok in moderation. I know a guy who sold his wifes car to buy a new sky-diving rig, bad idea in my book. Anything can become addictive, and when that happens, you've gone too far.Even Jesus turned water into wine to celebrate a wedding.

One thing for sure, Kilt wearing will enhance your drinking experience.

It's also fun to sing some of those drinking songs while wearing a kilt and lifting your glass in the air, especially if there's a bunch of us together who know the words.
