I understand Robbie. That's how I feel when I wear a tuxedo. I'm not a big fan of them, because I feel like I'm wearing a penguin costume.

Oddly enough though, I enjoy wearing ties. I feel that they're a must (for me) for formal occasions.

    Montrose Doublet

I have acquired my Prince Charlie evening jacket and waistcoat only fairly recently. Prior to that, for many years, I favoured the Montrose Doublet for 'black tie' events, and for formal Dances and Highland Balls. With all that lace, they really are something else and make the wearer feel very special - the Prince Charlie seems very 'ordinary' by comparison!

If this photo works (all that I post in this forum seem to disappear within a few hours!!), it shows me wearing my Montrose Doublet for a display of Scottish Country Dancing in London's Royal Albert Hall in 1969:

Here's my two bits about wearing a tartan tie with a kilt.

I've noticed that if someone wears a tartan tie with their kilt, but wears a closed jacket (Prince Charlie or Argyll), that it doesn't look too bad. However, when there's no jacket, or the jacket is open, it doesn't look very good. The reason is that the tartan of the tie is always at an angle which goes very contrary to the tartan layout of the kilt. It makes the tartans clash and look really bad (Especially if the tie is touching the kilt - the contrasting patterns could make one dizzy!)

So, I'm a little late posting on this one, but that's my opinion, for what it's worth.

What I am looking for is a regular vest(s) [waistcoat(s)], in tweed, to wear with my kilts. Now, the question is does anyone know of a good Canadian source. The shipping/duty from outside Canada is a killer.

Try MacIsaac Kiltmakers in Nova Scotia. They have a waistcoat on this page:

I know what you mean about shipping and duty. Try bringing in a dozen rolls of fabric from England!

    Tartan Tie

Al' wrote: Awful things, manufactured purely for the tourists. I put them in the same category as tartan hose.

Fifty years ago when I was at school and we wore kilts as (best) school-uniform, it was permitted to wear a tartan tie (matching the tartan of kilt) instead of a school- or house-tie. In those days, tartan ties were definitely not manufacturered "purely for the tourists".
Nowadays a self-coloured tie to tone with the tartan of the kilt is often preferred to a tartan tie, mainly for the reason Blu mentioned: that the size of the sett of the tartan used for the tie is often a miniature version of that of the kilt itself and the contrast may look a little odd, especially when cut on the diagonal. It is, of course, always acceptable to wear an old-school or college tie, provided its colours do not clash too luridly with those of the tartan - or maybe even if they do!

As for tartan hose, I beg to differ with Al' - tartan or diced hose are undoubtedly the correct wear with the Montrose doublet he would like to wear at least once! (White hose had not been "invented" when I was young and the only time ornamental belts were worn with a kilt was on a Montrose doublet.)

    Hi David

Far from me to argue with old school! but I see many a photograph of guys wearing Montrose doublet and most are wearing plain hose. One or two have the tartan jobbies. Looks like too much tartan to me. Ergo my opinion about tartan ties.

    Al
