Hey dude, welcome from the beaches of Southern California!

BTW LOVE your city. Was just there last month and the hills of Edinburgh put San Francisco's to shame.

First, and most importantly, congratulations on finding such a sensible woman. I hope you have a great wedding and a wonderful life.

As for what kilt to buy, I suggest trying to find the tartan that has the most meaning to you in whatever way is important to you, and getting a kilt in that tartan. At least, then, you'll have some, even if not a strong connection to it.

In any case, welcome to the XMTS forum from the mountains of northern New Mexico! You picked the right place to learn about all things tartan, kilt, and Scottish attire.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Congratulatons on your Engagement!! Planning an Edinburgh Wedding is great fun! My daughter just got married in June at the Hub in the High Street. Great venue for a Wedding. The whole process was tremendous from start to finish.

If you are looking for a Piper, may I suggest you have a look at
http://thepickledpiper.co.uk/wp/ He was brilliant on every possible level and excellent value for money.

The same can be said about the Videographer, Photographer and the Kilt Shop we used. PM me if you'd like any details.

A' the best from the Isle of Skye.

    Cheers!

G'Day from the other side of the world in sunny Queensland.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Your intended is absolutely right (you'll get used to this!), the kilt is definitely the way to go.

The best advice I could give you would be to go along to some of the excellent Scottish Outfitters in Edinburgh and seek their advice. Some hire complete highland dress outfits, so you could be sure you were "properly dressed". You can then decide whether you want to make the potentially significant investment in an outfit of your own - depends how often in the future you think you are likely to wear it.

Since you've not worn a kilt before, don't leave it to your wedding day to start! Hire just the basic kilt, sporran and hose for a few weekends in advance and learn to manage the 8 yards of cloth you'll be wearing. Simple things, like sitting and getting into and out of cars take a while to learn!

As to a tartan, if you have any traditional associations, that would be the way to go, otherwise a generic tartan would be better, the Edinburgh tartan might seem appropriate? Better yet, ask your fiancee to help you choose.

Good luck to you both and I wish you a long and happy life together.
    Regards, Sav.
