Graham,
I agree that the short-sock look can look good and that the piccies on Bear's website are testament to this. Just don't think it's a smart enough look for an office environment.
Kind regards
David.
ps. I'm very flattered that you should have been thinking of me the other day. Thanks for sharing that - means a lot.

All the piccies there but one show short socks, I think they all look great. Bear in particular (as well as Duncan on Monarch)have for some time been an inspiration to me so far as the "look" I like.
Ditto, Graham. I think Duncan has been an inspiration to all kilt wearers to go casual, and the pictures on Bears' site support that.

I think that the short sock look depends on the stature and build of the person.
With me, being a slight person, I have more the look of the tartan school girl with bobby socks.

Sorry, i was not aware of your office position, place and circumstance often dictates.
If I was in an office - I would wear kilt hose, but i live in the bush, quite a different situation

Wow! I never noticed all those short socks! Thanks for pointing that out, Gray.
As for being an inspiration, I wear what I like, what is comfortable, and sometimes, what is expected for a given occasion.
I wouldn't wear short socks in an office because having an office position means you have accepted wearing certain professional attire. Higher socks, even rugby socks, would be called for.
I found a pair of burgundy rugby socks with black tops that suit my Maple Leaf kilts perfectly. I'll see if I can get some pics taken by Cub.

Bear,
That's good to know about the burgundy socks, as I purchased some in anticipation of my new kilt.

Anyway, I have a question to ask:
Do you think its possible to be "smart" in a kilt without wearing "over the calf" kilt hose?
Reason I ask is that, now that summer is coming (well at least in this hemisphere...), kilt hose is becoming a little warm to wear, especially during the day. The wearing of short socks or rolling down the kilt hose looks more "casual" to me (and I do wear short socks this time of year).
If you wanted to go for the "smart-casual" look (none of my kilts are appropriate for very formal occasions) is it a must that the kilt hose is "over the calf"? For example, we have a smart-casual policy at work, and it would be nice to wear a kilt to work during the summer and get the benefit of being cooler than if wearing trousers, but you'd lose the benefit if you were wearing kilt hose.
Opinions gratefully received....
David.
Hi David
I have to say, if you want 'smart', you should wear kilt hose 'up to the knee' so to speak. If not kilt hose then something similar like a football sock. Any long sock would do. Garter flashes will keep them tidy.
That's not to say that a high legged boot and a rolled down sock wouldn't look good. (A pair would look even better ) I like it. But I would only wear this for casual. I would even consider a hiking type sandal and no socks - if I'm dossing around the caravan site, on the beach or in the garden at home.
Robbie or Hamish may be able to offer more ideas.

For my two bits, I think it looks great when guys wear crew-length socks with their kilts. Very butch. However, when guys wear the ankle socks, especially with loafers....YUCK! It definitely makes them look efeminite to me, but I'm not sure why.
Here's a link for some solid colored Rugby hose.

They seemed pretty cheap - $6 American. They had a lot of different colors too.

For those guys who don't live in the middle of nowhere, how about trying out a local sport shop. I would have thought they would sell general sport type socks that are over knee high. Just a thought.
