Hey! Come on Freelander. One of the great advantages of the kilt is that it DOES NOT wear out - unless you constantly wear a sporran CHAIN on it!!!!
I'll invest in a strap very soon
Giraffe :
you'll no doubt get lots of these but if you have the chance Oban is nice. Also a trip on the West Highland railway is fantastic ( scenes from Harry Potter 2 were filmed there.)

First time out in public
Today, Friday June 11, 2004, was my very first time out in public wearing my kilt. I had finally worked up the guts to order one from USAKilts, and it’s been in my possession for a little more than a week. Before today, I'd only worn it around the apartment, with brief and fitful forays to the mailbox or to take out the trash.
When I woke up this morning, the first thing I thought about was my kilt and how much I wanted to wear it out. After I put it on, the girlfriend and me headed out for breakfast. I was a bit nervous, but in one way or another I've been a bit of an outsider all my life, so I figure I've faced bigger challenges.
We went to a diner where we're both regulars, and I got nothing but positive comments. The only questionable comment was from a stranger, who asked, "Why are you wearing that today?" I guess maybe he thought it was in honor of Ronald Regan... I just said, "Because it's my day off and I can." That seemed to satisfy him, and he went away.
The rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent picking up my car from the shop and shopping for groceries. Overall, it was a positive, confidence-building experience. I'm already plotting my next kilt purchase...
I guess my main concern was mocking remarks from passers-by. But then, living in Silverlake (east of Hollywood), I needn't have worried. The girl in a leather jacket and neon-pink roller skates zooming down the sidewalk, the white guy with a twelve-inch high afro, the aging hippie poet in sleeveless tie-dye shirt and ancient top hat, the S&M leather boys in their store across the street... I'm the least of anyone's worries!
By the way, Rocky at USAKilts is great! He answered my numerous questions in a timely manner, and made a fantastic kilt for me!

Glad to hear from you SP get used to wearing a knowing smile as well as your kilt. It'll make you feel a cut above the norm. Look forward to your thoughts.

I've been wearing kilts exclusively since March and it's grand. A good stride with head held high prevents stupid comments mostly and the swing of the pleats breaks the ladies hearts. Soon you'll be like most of us, uncomfortable in trousers and wearing kilts at every opportunity.

I'm not sure which is more difficult; wearing your kilt into public for the first time, or telling a group of guys you don't know that you wore your kilt into public for the first time. So, Steve, welcome and know that two steps were taken when you posted.
My first time wearing my kilt was to a Celtic event. Somewhat safe, until after driving for three hours, I had to stop for a nature call at a truck stop in the middle of Michigan. You would be surprised what kind of motivation a full bladder can be. I didn't care what was said as long as they didn't block my path to the toilet.
Tomorrow, off to Indiana for the Scottish Games and Festival... Kilted. Everyday is an event in a kilt..
Slainte,
Tobie

Steve,
Congratulations on wearing your kilt today and being able to share it with us, and welcome to the board. I know that you will enjoy yourself.

The first time I wore my kilt was about a year ago out in California. I was visiting some friends who own an original Morris Minor(sp?) and we went to an all british car show up Chico way. I wore my casual Douglas and they both wore Black Watch kilts. Naturally the Morris took first place in its category.
The second time was last July, I attended the San Diego Comicon International comic book convention. Wore my kilt half the time I was there. After that every opportunity, I would wear the kilt.
When winter settled in I decided to order a 9 yard heavy weight. My casual just can't handle some of the winds and cold temperatures we experience on top of a mountain.
And now I've learned that I'm not the only kilted one in CLoudcroft. A college student who graduated from the high school here last year wears a utilikilt on occasion, sometimes even working in one.

Hi Freelander
I looked in the same arcade last year and found the same shop. Seemed to be a bit expensive compared to many many others in Inverness.
I couldn't understand, that with all those kilt shops in business, why was I one of only a handful of guys kilted in the city.
My first 'outing' was a day around Loch Ness, a boat trip, lunch in a hotel and a bit of shopping. Lots of stares from foreigners. Not a flinch from the locals. The cameras clicked continually. Oh...and I managed to flash someone whilst walking up a metal open spiral staircase.
