Have a look at this site http://www.scottishtradingcompany.co...ndex&cPath=151
You have the fishtail trews, usually worn with braces. You have high waisted trews, much like the high waist on a traditional kilt and you have tartan trousers that are like regular suit trousers Then you have the old fashioned trews which are somewhat like stockings but made of a much thicker material (as mentioned in post 18). Cheers

Enjoying the thread. I've been thinking of getting either fish-tail trews or high-waisted trousers for some time now. In fact, I was just discussing this very idea with the chief of the Elliot's last week. I mentioned most of the locals (Scots) wore trews or trousers to our gatherings, while most of our members from abroad (outwith) wore kilts. My only concern is that except for the clan gatherings, I'm more inclined to wear a kilt so they might not get much use.

I looked at your link, Mike. There are no trews on that site. They have high waisted trousers and even fishtail high waisted trousers, but no trews. even a search for trews on that site reveals nothing found. In fact trews are normally very close fitting, made from the same tartan wool as a kilt would be made from, to be worn at the natural waist, fishtailed for braces and have no pockets (nor flies!). I have never seen trews sold "off the peg" (so to speak). They need to be made to measure or bespoke.

Yes you are correct, then would you agree that these from the old Highland Clans site are trews. http://www.highlandclans.co.uk/Tarta..._Fishtail.html

Though its been a while since I last made a post in this thread, I thought I just had to share the good news that the high waisted trews from Scotweb were just as I expected them to be, truly smashing.
I wore the trews on the national day of Norway the 17th of May with a dark blue blazer, white standard collar shirt, matching tartan tie and brown brogues. It certainly did the trick and blended in nicely between all the bunads (Norwegian national costumes) and 2/3 piece suits that most of the other men were wearing.
