I wouldn't be too upset about Pakistani manufacture -- there's a surprising (or not) quantity of low-end "Scottish" merchandise comes from the "Highlands of Kashmir"
If the seller is well regarded, the quality should be commensurate with the price.

Don,
who did you get your 13oz.Pakistani wool kilt from? I was looking at one from UT Kilts as a reasonable compromise between a 16 oz. tank and a PVC or acrylic casual.

My knockabout did come from UT Kilts. There are differences -- the following pictures may give you an idea
It's just a quick and dirty set of shots roughly set to be similar size/scale. I included a tape measure to give
an idea of the sett size.
marsden-PV-Macgregor-modern.JPG This one is the Marsden Mills PV MacGregor Modern
USA-kilt-construction.jpgA bit of a construction detail of a USA Kilt semi-casual(Chosen because the "look" is intended to be similar)
UT-kilt-MacGrgor-modern.JPG UT Kilt MacGregor Modern in wool -- note the smaller sett size (sorry - the tape's a little hard to read)
UT-kilt-construction.jpg UT Kilt construction detail -- sett matching isn't as nice, over-stitching more visible, etc.
Would most people pick this -- I doubt it. And I bought this as a "pub kilt" -- they'd be less likely to pick it
in the dark.
Now, for comparison.....
locharron-mac-gregor-ancient.JPG Locharron MacGregor ancient tartan
and
dalgleish-MacGregor-reproduction.JPG Dalgleish MacGregor Reproduction tartan (Personally, my favourite MacGregor palette)
scottweb-Balmoral-detail.jpg Scottweb Balmoral 8yd construction detail -- note how the belt loop and buckle anchors disappear
and the fell stitching is invisible.
As I said in my previous post, TANSTAAFL (RA Heinlein, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, There ain't no such thing as a free lunch)
More money does equal better kilt -- but if it's to be used in situations where it may get wrecked, then by all means look at
either one of Rocky's semi-casual kilts or one of the UT kilts. (Note: I also considered Buy-a-Kilt's acrylic offerings and I actually
do have one in Stewart Black -- the big problem for me with B-a-K is the lack of a MacGregor sett.)
Probably more of an answer than you wanted, Sorry.

Thanks, AussieDon. Those are very enlightening photos. You read a lot of negative comments on here about Pakastani products, but the pictures and your description help clarify the quality differences.

I have two kilts, both PV which I bought from the same company. I am very happy with both of them. Like the OP, I do not have a lot of money at the moment, so am unable to have a 100% wool kilt made for me (although that is the dream).

In terms of comfort and feel, I have had no complaints with either of the kilts I've bought from HOS. I am about to buy a third one from them, as their deliveries are prompt, the returns policy if you're not happy with the product is excellent and the reply to email questions extremely quickly.

I'd either save my pennies for 16oz wool or order one of Rocky's casuals/semi-traditionals.
More money but a better fit, better quality.
Just my tuppence.
You can't beat heavy wool, though.
What are you chaps doing that you're worried about damading your kilts?! I would just choose a more activity-appropriate garment rather than risk my kilt in those situations.
