I've just asked them if they can do a casual in any Welsh tartan or Celtic Nations.

    Can you elaborate?[/QUOTE]

Like most here, it is something to throw on to wear in the yard, maybe a running event, ultra casual meetings/visits, etc....

If you'd like a "wider" apron, you might want to look at the Duty Kilt at the supplier, 5.11 Tactical. Com . This one might be more in line with what you were looking for, with many fine features....http://www.511tactical.com/tactical-...lt-124771.html

I also recommend you check out Bobs work (Ratspike here on XMTS) at:
    http://www.gryphonworkshop.com

These are a couple of options....

By now you've got the idea. I have one Sport Kilt because it came in the Buchanan Modern. During the summer here we have those days that we call 90/90 or Dog Days- 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity. I don't like to subject my wool kilts to that and then have to deal with cleaning etc. So I will wear the sport kilt. When the temps drop or to any indoor or even remotely formal event I wear the wool. I will say that for the MANY younger members of our family ( and I have 7 brothers and sisters all with grand-children and great-grandchildren) the youth sizes in the Sport Kilt and other brands is a Godsend in the Buchanan Tartan as we can outfit them for pennies on the dollar until they are old enough for a Tank.

In my humble opinion, sport kilts are pretty much only good for that. I bought one in the clergy tartan and it would do for knocking about the house, but it doesn't dress up well at all. The rise is too low to really look good for any type of traditional fashion. The light weight also is a bit of a hindrance. It might seem nice for warm days, but the slightest of breezes could answer the age old question definitively. Once I get my birthday present of a wool kilt in the clergy tartan, my sport kilt will likely end up collecting dust or be my kilt for fencing. But again, this is just my opinion.

I have one of the "Original" Sport Kilts which I have used for running, hiking, working around the house, and occasionally to some very casual sporting events. It is a tartan kilt so, to me, it has more of a kilt appearance than some of the utility models. Where I live it is frequently 90-100 F, too hot to wear a wool kilt outdoors. When I want to dress more properly, I don't choose the Sport Kilt.

I've got two SportKilts and 2 USAKilt Casuals. I also have others including a 5 yard USAKilt in Wool (which is a wonderful garment). But back to the SportKilts - I wear mine a lot - probably splitting the time with the USAK casuals. My "favorite" SportKilt has belt loops, sewn down pleats and pockets. I didn't want straps/buckles because I prefer a belt. I tend to wear my USAK Casuals for going out and about - but have also worn the SportKilt (shopping, lunch, dinner out) and have gotten as many compliments as when wearing anything else.

Don't worry about SportKilt "not advertising here." They are not after the mainstream (high-end) kilt crowd and not paying for non-targeted advertising might give them a bit more leeway in price.

Instant savings may also be available: If you sign up for a newsletter at the SportKilt site you will likely receive a 10% discount code via email. I had contacted USAKilts and asked about a 10% discount - and was turned down. Even with no X-Marks discount, my next kilt will likely be a USAK Casual in the Sterling tartan - or - it might be something from GryphonWorkshop. or - both.

Regarding those who suggest saving up for a "real" kilt. OK - that's one valid way of thinking. However, I figured I could save up for a several-hundred-dollar purchase OR own several less expensive kilts and have choices to wear - right now. That was my approach, indeed, but I did eventually get that 5-yard wool from Rocky's shop. I also wear my kilts a lot, whereas many of those with the "high end" purchases only venture out a couple times a year. YMMV.

If you are too busy to laugh, you are too busy.

I have ordered a Sport Kilt and a more traditional 6yd wool kilt, both in our clan tartan so that I have an option. I will have one for when a more formal attire is necessary or desired, or one that I will not mind ruining when competing in the Highland Games. I definitely would never want to wear a $500 or $800 wool kilt in any type of games like that.

Both my Sport Kilt and my wool kilt will be arriving here in Hawaii this week and next week. The Sport Kilt just shipped out today and is expected here on Thursday. The wool kilt left Scotland on the 13th and made it to San Francisco in just 2 days, it has since been sitting there in California. Apparently they are putting it on a boat from California instead of flying it over, so that takes about another week.

I will let you know when they both come in what I think of both versions.

I bought a Sport Kilt a few months ago and have hiked in it twice. I also have a USA Kilts casual. I am still test driving them but I will give you my initial comments comparing the two, your mileage may vary.

Things I like about the Sport Kilt: The tartan I purchased is woven in a larger sett than the Marton Mills version, so the kilt looks better from the front at 20 yards. I can put it on without undoing the Velcro (I purchased an XL to fit my 44-inch rump not my 38-inch waist). I think I am starting to like the pockets for keeping snacks handy. I can wear the waistband at the true waist which keeps it above the hip belt on my pack; I wear a web belt from Home Depot.

Things I like about the USA Kilts Casual: The Marton Mills fabric is terrific. The kilt is sewn with precision and there are more and deeper pleats. I modified the kilt by removing the top seam and the upper inch of the pleat seams. I tacked each pleat one inch below the top first. This created some semblance of a waistband and I wear the kilt at the true waist with a 1.75-inch web belt.

    Additional Comments:

The fell on the USA Kilts casual is a frustum with no waist band and the Sport Kilt is a cylinder with gathered with elastic at the top.

Neither kilt can handle much wind. I was glad I had my trekking poles on Sunday to hold my apron down on several occasions.

Neither has the underlying reinforcement that helps a tank fit snuggly and hang well so neither hangs quite right. I would expect this to be less of an issue if your rump and waist measurements are close to the same.

Neither is going to look like a tank from close distance standing still or swish like a tank in motion. Yet I have only received nice comments on the trail the latest one on Sunday when a fellow commented "sick kilt".

Right after I posted the preceding reply the kilt from Melville Kilts was delivered along with a dress sporran, fly plaid, Argyll jacket, and matching flashes. Everything was packaged so that nothing happened to it on its way here from Scotland.

They are all so beautiful. This is the first time I have seen the Modern Anderson tartan in person and the photos of it do not do it justice at all. Unfortunately my kilt hose and Ghillie Brogues will not be here until Thursday. I cannot wait to wear my new kilt out in public. I will definitely have to order several more of these. I can see me wearing this several times a week at least.

With the temperature here in Hawaii, I believe this weight of kilt will be just about perfect. Im actually glad that it is PV and not 100% wool with our heat and humidity.

I have one Sport Kilt that I use for hot weather. I usually wear it at camp or such. I like it for what it is. I have a few other kilts that I like better but the Sport Kilt is nice and lightweight and if I mess it up, I'm not out a lot of money.
