The problem with trying to photograph the black on black Tartans is that they always come out looking like plain black fabric.
It takes the light hitting them to show the Tartan pattern. We did have some luck using a cell phone to take pics to help us align the Tartan when sewing. With luck we still have a few of those.
Otherwise drop me a line and I'd be happy to send you a swatch. We just finished a kilt in the Ben Dubh Tartan from Marton Mills.
Take my word for it these are truly black on black.
When customers take a fancy to one of these I always tell them "If you are wearing a kilt in this Tartan and someone asks 'What clan is that?', you can answer, ---wait for it --- Clandestine!"
A rim shot please.

I have a USAK casual in the Glyndwr, it is very striking. the photos really do not do it justice. It looks very "formal", especially with the red stripe.

Here are the pics I promised.
The Ben Dubh Tartan when seen in normal light looks like a plain black fabric kilt.
But when it moves, is in direct sunlight or you catch the light just right you can see the Tartan pattern quite plainly.
This is achieved by using two different yarns. Both are the exact same color of black but one is spun and twisted to the left and one to the right.

Beautiful! Thank you so much for posting these!
Has this technique ever been used with any other colour? Just wondering if it would work the same way...

And it arrived today in the mail. Yay! Thanks Benning Boy!
