Although not across the water from you and wearing kilts every day, the black Watch is very useful. It is considered universal, it doesn't show the dirt and it is much more understated in colour than my Anderson tartan ones are, so for day to day wear it suits me fine and I have 3 of them for casual wear. I don't have a military history, except for getting expelled from the cadet corps at school and am not into heavyweight military kilts so mine are all of a more disposable nature but for casual daily wear - ideal.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

My House Of Edgar regimental Royal Stewart kilt has nearly a 10-inch sett.
It's one of the many interesting things about The Highlanders Of Scotland portraits, the larger variety of sett sizes seen in men's kilts than one usually sees today.
Richard, that's not the case, for example; here are the full sett sizes for the 42nd from Wilsons' 1819 KPB.

Only one setting for Fine Kilts and Fine Plaids is under 10 inches. I've never counted a sample of Government No1 but I suspect that it was something like Wilsons' Coarse Kilt setting in which case, allowing for the heavier No1, the sett would have been at least as big if not bigger.

My wife was in the Israeli military, and she likes Blackwatch both because she equates it to military service and “because it is a flattering tartan to wear.”
I’ve got Blackwatch pants and shirts, but that has much to do with being able to find mass produced shirts and pants in the tartan.
When it comes to Kilts, I prefer tartans closer to my heart/experience, and I don’t like the thought of someone thinking I served in The Blackwatch.
I should add, she wears a Blackwatch the pattern often, but not the kilt. She does have a conversation when people ask her about it though.

Black Watch Tartan choice
Waleslax
I cannie blame your partner in her choice, the only Black Watch I have is a Black Watch regimental tie which I bought
this year when my wife and I went up to Perth and the regiment museum, which really was interesting. I've got to say I
bought the tie in my fathers memory who served with the btn, and i really like the tartan myself.

The tartan is extremely popular and easy to find, often at a much more affordable price than many of the less-common clan tartans. It is also very subdued in color scheme, making it easy to "match" and less scary for those who fear attracting to much attention with a brighter-hued sett like Royal Stewart.
I don't own a Black Watch kilt myself, but I have certainly thought about getting one many times and may do so yet.

My wife likes it. She does not like any Appin Stewart or the McMichael tartan.

I just really love the colors.

Black Watch, weathered colorway.
