I have been trying to come up with a sensible comment about the picture, Bruce, between the laughter and tears.

All I can say to those that say wearing the kilt poorly is better than not wearing the kilt at all------and before some wag chips in, I assume that they will be wearing something------------ I respectfully disagree. Personally, a properly worn kilt and attire is a pleasure to see and yes in a small way, it lifts my heart. Whilst I am not in the least bit surprised by it, the picture above is just, depressing.

They don't look very put together, as my mother would say, do they?

The jauntily worn hat (clearly too small) was what made me giggle, it was only when I really zoomed in I realised there was a thistle jammed into like those head boppers (had to google for correct name) in decades gone past.

Now have to admit that they're my neighbours to the north of Galloway and admit that us lowlanders have a lot to learn, luckily I stumbled upon this website before coming out (kilted), though not so lucky for my wallet not that I have "refined" tastes.

Somebody please elaborate on what those chaps need to improve on. I see a few things maybe, but I'm not sure I see what you are seeing.

Well alright, purely from an educational point of view, let us take the chap on the left of picture. So from an almost instant blink of an eye I see; Hose too high, flashes too long, kilt too low, sporran awry, wearing a plated belt buckle during the day, wearing a belt with a waistcoat, bottom waistcoat button undone, a subtle tattersall pattern shirt would do nicely, awful tie, dreadful tie knot, tie awry, shirt collar awry.

Now the sporran , tie and shirt collar awry comments are a tad hard as the poor fellow my have been moving stuff, just before the picture was taken. The plated belt buckle should not be worn during the day, an open spike buckle is worn during the day, with kilt attire the bottom button of the waistcoat should be done up. Finally, Black jacket and waistcoat would be better if a green/brown/ patterned tweed was worn. In fact, with the addition of a sporran chain rather than a strap, I really suspect a hire company influence here.

Now you look at the chap on the right of picture and tell me what you see!

The very moment I looked at that photo, I suspected the same thing. Either they rented their outfits, or they were fitted by a supplier, specific to the event. The matching tartans are the biggest hint, of course, but the construction and fit of those kilts make it clear that they came from the same source. Both kilted men seem to be wearing long matching tartan flashes as well. And all three men seem to be wearing identical belts. I'd find it hard to believe this was coincidence. They had to be outfitted by one source, probably a promoter or advertiser for the event.

The ruche-style tie on the fellow at left, coupled with the evening jacket on the center fellow, seem to be hallmarks of hire company fashion (though certainly not limited solely to hire companies).

Haha,ok then, but I certainly didn't notice that much before, just the tie and sporran mostly. All I see with the chap on the right is a crooked sporran with the flap open. Looks like he might have a kilt pin in his tie,and his kilt pin on the kilt looks a little low to me. Also wearing a belt plate, now that you mention it. It looks like he might be wearing his kilt slightly low also.

His hose? Flashes? Kilt? Tie? Shirt? Collar? Any thoughts?

Hose too high? Flashes too long? Shirt Collar too button down? Tie too long?Too loose at neck? The shirt I just don't know what could be the problem, the color? I will say that I personally don't care for the black hose look, but that's just me. Also if possible I would have tried to wear either a shorter jacket or a jumper as you say over there, but if the jacket he's wearing is all he had at the time it's understandable.
