Congrats on your first excursion Jonathan. Things only get better, the negatives are so few you won't even notice them. Walk tall brother. 8)

Well done Jonathan!
I am one of those everyday kilt wearing "Gods" you kindly refer to.
I too started kilt wearing whilst at school - I was 14 - but now I'm 68, and I didn't get rid of my trousers until almost six years ago. Here's hoping you won't wait that long!

Brother swat88eighty, I have searched long and hard trying to find something for McCullough. I have seen a custom kilt from www.house-of-tartan.scotland.net, "MacCullough/MacCulloch Family tartan, #3214; Source: Donald McCullough; Status: Registered; Date: 2000", listed for around $800. My sweet bride loves me, but not that much .
I am very interested in what you may have found, and what you wear.
I'm old and ugly, and would probably scare children if I ever actually wear a kilt in public, but I am very interested in doing it. Yes, it would be nice to wear an official "McCullough" pattern, but I'm certainly open and willing to wear anything acceptable - until the police arrest me for being a public eyesore.

First Time Out
Well done. After a while you will not notice a thing.Once at Ft.Ligonier,I was asked if I was "with the band" as I got out of my car.Even at a reenactment you will find people who just don't understand.Hopefully they will get it eventually.

Yes, that tartan you found is the McCullough tartan. (hey, you are a McCullough, aren't you? Vi Et Animo!) It is a beautiful tartan, but, due to the fact it has so many colors, it's a bitch for the looms to make, and it is VERY expensive. I am not getting one, unless, by some chance, I get married, and my girl lets me have my dream-kilted wedding. THEN, I will be in debt for awhile it was registered in the Y2K by Donald McCullough, I have emailed him a few times. Great guy! It is based on the tartans of the different clans which we are entitled to wear. We are what is considered a "sept" of the clans MacDougal, MacDonald, Munro, Ross, and Gunn. So, we are "entitled" to wear any of their patterns. I wear a MacDonald of the Isles pattern, because it was available, it is beautiful, and it was cheap. (I have a mass prduced kilt.) So, if you want to be "authentic" yet save money, get one of the clans tartans listed above.
Either way, it's great to know another MacCulloch is on these boards now. Oh, and don't worry about wearing a kilt in public. Remember, we descend from mercenaries and highwaymen (it's true for those that don't know me clans' history! ) so just kick the **** of any laughers.

My First Time Out!
Well my fellow kilt wearing bravehearts, I took my first day outside the home in me kilt yesterday! I went with me da to the bank and then to dinner after stopping by his office, and completing my homework. I got a few strange looks, and this one scruffy southern looking fellow at the bank was staring at me, but trying to make his rudeness discreet... I noticed it though! But, no rude comments. At my da's office, two employees thought it was nice, and even called it a kilt and not a skirt.
I will admit, I did feel "out of place." I did not, however feel (not to make anyone angry, I am not homophobic or anything) "gay" or "girly." Just, kind of weird, as they all wear pants. But, I love my kilt and will wear it out again and again. See you all later.
PS- to all you guys who Don't EVEN wear pants at all, you are AMAZING. Like gods!

Johnathan you have crossed the threshhold and there is no going back. You just got the rush most of us have and it will get easier each time you go out. Keep wearing it with pride. You will only make them jealous that your man enough!
