I couldn't agree more - an adult book in a childlike guise. It is a hauntingly beautiful story, especially "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

My mother was very fond of The Wind in the Willows. During the last few months of her life I read it aloud to her in her care home. When it came to the chapter The Piper at the Gates of Dawn we were both in tears. It is one of the few descriptions of a mystic experience I know in a novel that carries conviction.

I still find Toad a bore. The Rat and Mole chapters are much more compelling.

What a lovely memory for you and your mother. I believe you two will read it to each other again and share that memory.

You're right about Toad, and Rat and Mole. Toad represents a type of unpleasant person we all encounter from time to time. Or, maybe there's just a bit of Toad in all of us.

    Hey, Father Bill
If you are a Christie fan I`d love to know what you think of the Hamish MacBeth mysteries by M.C. Beaton. I find the adventures of PC MacBeth to be highly entertaining, full of sly humor, and in some ways an interesting glimpse into life in a modern highland village. Also, nothing like `90`s BBC series of the same name.

I'm re-reading Armour by John Steakley, yet again. This and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card are my favorite Sci-Fi novels. That's saying a lot, since I really like Asimov's Foundation series and Herbert's Dune series.
