Just spent 6 days in the Scottish lowlands, all the time in one of my beaten up acrylic kilts. Only one comment that I heard and that was a female to her partner: "Look there is a man in a kilt." There may have been other remarks but my hearing is not that good these days.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Do you think wearing a kilt in the lowlands would be more accepted than in the highlands?

You will have to address that question to Jock Scot, though personally I would not have said it would make any difference. Me, I'll wear mine anywhere, very few people pay much attention. It is like most personal things, you are much more aware of it than anyone else.

May I ask why you are moving to that area? For business or maybe retirement? In either case, you will be another invaluable resource as to wearing the kilt in either Scotland OR NI.
Cheers!

So true! We do tend to be, at least to some degree, self-conscious about being 'different'.

As an expatriate Scot living in New Zealand I followed the Referendum voting closely, from the time BBC World TV coverage began until it was all over. Scrutinising the supporters at the YES and NO headquarters I was sad to see only one kilt among them all. Surely, if Scots were proud of their kilt this would have been the occasion to show it. Had I been there, as a foreign Scot in my present state of thinking, I would have worn it. That would have been two, visible to the world.
By the way, it seems an opportune time for the Peacemakers to take down their wordy warning at the city gates and not replace it with anything.

Whilst I spent much of my time out on the hill on that day, I could not help but notice a few more kilts being worn than might be normal around here.
