I'm taking a 2-3 week interval to re-focus on lifting to maintain strength levels going into the second half of the season. I'll throw at least once a week but I want to lift several times a week with more intensity than I have recently. Thus, last night I pulled, working up to 4 sets of 3 with 245 which felt very comfortable; next week I want to take another shot at 300. Tonight, after warm ups, I did overhead press topping out with 3 sets of 3 with 105. Given that I haven't really done any significant overhead work in the past several months, I was happy with these sets.

Marty, you should think about composing your posts offline using a text word processor like Notepad or some such. When you've said everything you want to say, do a cut and paste to XMarks.
As to your strength levels, focus on maintaining strength rather than getting stronger. Throw more frequently than you lift.

Kit, I may start composing on Notepad and doing the cut/paste. Recently, depending on which computer I'm using, I'll compose on XMarks, save to Wordpad, and then if there's a problem posting I cut/paste and try again. Starting on Wordpad would be a good idea.
Re the lifting - I agree that maintaining strength levels is the focus at this point, not getting stronger.
Sunday afternoon throwing with Gman. After warmups we did some hammer and then moved over to play with the WOB set up that Alan donated to Shaffer Park. We, mainly Garrett, used some twine to shore up several stays and add to the bar adjustment lines, and then we just played with it. Instead of going heavy we rigged a 28 for WOB, started at 10 and went up from there to the 14' max. Worked on explosion with butt down and full extension. It was also good practice for getting used to going over high bar settings. Throwing for 10 or 11 is not the same as trying to hit 13 or 14, even if the weight is much less than usual.
A fairly short session because real life stuff demanded our attention.

Yesterday I went to the gym hoping to squat but the racks were both taken. I'll try again this evening. I would note for the record that my purpose in lifting right now is more about stress relief and deep relaxation than speed, strength, or throwing. My father, 85 yrs, is beginning hospice care at home tomorrow, after spending the past week or so in the hospital. He remains mentally sharp and in complete control of his medical care at this point, headed for the horizon with a quiet grace, secure in the knowledge that he used his time here very well, indeed.

Sorry to hear that your father is on that road, but this is very nicely put and surely a comfort to all who love him.

Thank you LitTrog.
Squats are the cure for all non-viral ailments...When you're all grinched up for whatever reason, traps followed by squats are the ticket to getting out the kinks. Plus, when you've got 250 lbs or more across your shoulders, the need to stay focused rather effectively clears your mind of any other extraneous thoughts. Pure refreshment for body and mind.

OH yeah.
I'm sorry about your father, but the way you put it..."used his time here very well indeed" is about as good as it gets.

I"m very sorry to hear your dad is in the final stages of his life. There's a small grace in being able to accept the inevitable and do so on his own terms.
My dad is the same age and may well be in the very early stages of dementia. When I talk to him he seems fine but Mom has doubts. Dad's always been a bit of joker so it's hard to tell. The good news is that his family are incredibly long-lived with most making their mid-90's. Hoping this proves to be the case for my dad as I'm not yet ready to be completely on my own.
Enjoy your dad as much as you can. It's a hard row to hoe but life is what happens while we make other plans.
Be strong.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad, Marty. I will pray that his remaining time is as fruitful as he has been accustomed to and that you are able to make the most of this meaningful time!
