I have said it before and I will say it again. "I really like this thread."

I wish some of the ladies on the forum would post here. sydnie7 just made a contribution, but 95% of the posts in here are by guys.
Then again:
1. most of the member of X Marks the Scot are male
2. several of our lasses aren't really into dressing up "femme" and opt for a more rugged look, so they don't post here.
I suspect that in fact
3. most of the lasses here don't much care to wear tartan, they'd rather leave that to the men and they'll wear "normal" clothes in nearly all situations
and finally
4. I notice that many of the lasses who have posted in this thread are aghast at the skinny little models and revealing clothing. Yet at the same time they object to nearly anything put up here that's NOT ultra-revealing as being too hot in the summer. In other words, they're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, and their way out is to not wear tartan at all. There are exceptions to this, of course, like the FHCAG....
Just me hypothesizing, here, why this thread is overwhelmingly populated by men..

I'm mainly interested in ways to be "traditional"... information like how to wear the sash (not to mention all the different sash and rosette options I've seen), what's overkill with all my tartan (can I wear a bonnet, sash and skirt in the same tartan or should I leave one at home?)... what instances does one wear the frilly shirt, with ankle length tartan kilted skirt (and would a sash be overkill or appropriate) -- think about some of the recent white tie/black tie threads. I don't mean THOSE per se, but what type of outings DO you wear something like that too? I already know I can wear a sash with just about anything, but I mean more specific outfits like things sold on actual Scottish sites as ladies wear involving kilted skirts, sashes and where/how to wear them.
That sort of thing.
As far as things like caps and outfits that have been posted that could have come from any source or catelogue, most of them aren't in any tartans I'd be interested in and some of the outfits just aren't to my taste... plus, I think I'd rather wear a cute dress or gown in a solid color that goes well with one of my tartans and wear a sash.
I guess what I mean is some of the stuff posted here doesn't exactly run along what I'm looking for, but it does give me ideas here and there (for example, I do sometimes see regular non-tartan outfits paired with a lovely sash and I pay attention to those). I am NOT saying I don't like tartan, just that I have more specific needs and interests to gather information for.
I probably made absolutely no sense.
And I don't post here because I have one item that would even fall into the category and I've posted it already and haven't had a chance to buy more tops etc
Hope that helps explain why I don't post here very often.
Most "fashion" items that just happen to be in a tartan or plaid really don't hold my interest. I realize women apparently don't get something as interesting and traditional as the men with the kilt and all the accessories, but speaking for me I guess I am kind of looking for what comes closest that would work with my tartans. This thread IS interesting, but as far as how often I join in that depends on my bank account and what I might need answered.

I've already posted a picture of myself in this thread but wanted to add that I found that this is apparently the "Modern" Ladies' National Dress in Scotland according to scottishpatterns.com.
While I might potentially wear the tartan skirt, sash, and shoes...I'm not particularly fond of that style of vest (don't like the lumpy bottom) and I wouldn't ever wear the extremely poofy sleeves.
I did however come up with a modernized version of this using a ladies' kilt, white short sleeved chemise (shirt), knee length black socks (could be substituted with nylons, but I hate nylons), some dark flashes to add a little pop to the socks, leather ballet flats, and a black corset. I have not yet acquired this outfit, but I used a photo-editor to create it to show my hubby why I needed a corset. This is something I would wear out with my hubby kilted. I think it says Scottish without stepping on any male toes.

Those poofy sleeves are godawful IMHO.....

This is cool, Squeak! What is the pretty tartan in your photoshop?
I like a kilt to the middle or toppish of the knee (no mini!!), a nice blouse, hose because I do not like stockings, and your idea of ballet flats is excellent. I have ordered an Eton jacket for dressing up, one button of course. I have already had done a conversion of a Harris tweed jacket.
It seems that I dress to please myself, but I do usually get compliments on it, which makes my outfit easier to be comfy in.

The tartan is MacPherson Modern.
The kilt my hubby ordered for me is actually a mini kilt from Scotsweb, but I ordered it 18 inches long so it would hit my knee. (the mini was cheaper than the kilted skirt...Scottish thrift you know)

Cute outfit, and I love her shoes, Rex!!
Squeaky, I'm thinking about going for the 18 inch length when it's time for me to order, too. I'll have to double check with the measuring tape to see where that will fall on me exactly (I'm just under 6 ft tall), but I would like to have a mini-skirt that still feels just long enough for my comfort zone. I'm not sure, but I think it would be a couple of inches above my knee.
