So, in general...wear a belt, or wear a waistcoat...but not both. Some of our members here wear neither belt nor vest.
The purpose belts serve: (1) Break up (visually) the long waist on the kilt when no vest is worn, or, (2) for attaching a dirk with full formal wear.
Finally...I've been through this thread and don't recall HRH ever wearing a PC...I might be wrong. Are you maybe referring to the picture of him wearing a "Balmoral" doublet? I don't think I've ever seen him in a PC. Which post are you referring to?
It is the velvet 'Balmoral' doublet. One can purchase this style of doublet from Highland Clans out of Argyllshire (same place Sandy purchased his tartan, 'Appin' jacket). I have a few bespoke tartan waistcoats from them.

Lord Thurso is quite the smart dresser. I also quite like the Glen plaid in those tones.

Very sharp indeed, Kenneth. I'd like to see more of his attire, but the bloody car door is in the way! I like the use of a plain black Glengarry - especially with earth tones in day attire - superb contrast and look.

Kyle, I can't speak for certain, but this photo from the Sinclair site might imply his overall look:

That is a very smart looking tweed (I've seen it before), may I ask where the photo is from? There are so many tweed styles out there, one could have an army of jackets and waistcoats for day attire!
