You could refer him to some of the web pages you've discovered about the history of the kilt, showing that it is an entirely masculine garment. Matt Newsome's site has some great info too:

    http://albanach.org/

If he won't take the time to look online himself, you might consider making up a wee booklet of info from the 'net for him to peruse.

Have you checked out the Uneducated Educators thread in the Media section? So many educators to educate...

I have very little time on my hands at the moment on account of school but that will end tomorrow as I will be out for christmas break on my birthday no less. HOORAY!!! As far as the adninistrator goes he wasnt so much telling me because he wasnt so much telling me because he thought it was crossdressing. He has already defended the fact that it is a kilt and a male garment once against students (not a big deal but still...) He was telling me more because I was in danger of other admins. Which is the only reason I didnt give this one the finger and tell him to **edited** off (if there is a rule against foul language on this site tell me and ill curve it or just a preference). I had viewed the other thread about Warmack and I am completely for that petition. I hope they win. I think he (and us all) should be allowed to wear it anytime they please. Im not sure about others and Im not sure if the myth is true (the one about lack of underwear) but i wear umderwear with the kilt as a curtesy to the other people in the school. (even though I dont when im wearing pants) but I find its much more comfortable with a kilt. (plus its winter) Im going to talk to him and my guidene counselor tomorrow about this and see what happens then leave it alone for christmas but we shall see what happens.

Over aggressive attitude shown by you will be a negative to what you are trying to accomplish.

A clear head and a well thought of response will show the administration that you are not wearing the kilt as an act of defiance or to bring attention to yourself. You wear the kilt because you desire to.

I hope the meeting goes well and produces the desired result. Understanding and acceptance of you and kilting!

It definetly sounds like you are doing the right thing by continuing the avenues of talking to them. It is important to do that, but I too want to stress that the calmer and more informed you are the easier it will be to show people the facts. Granted some are not open, and those are the real tough ones, consider this comparison, some nuts are easy to crack while others take time. It will happen. Be optimistic and remember that you have a whole bunch of kilted people behind you.

Listen to mddock; keep a clear head, and don't get angry.

Not every war is won at the first battle. You don't have to conclude the issue in the first meeting; negotiate, and find out what will soothe their concerns. If you run into a brick wall with them, but haven't made it a discipline issue with the school (acting defiant), you can still go over their heads with the hope of someone over them over-ruling their decision. If you get defiant, their supervisors will be obligated to support them, whether they agree with you or not.

Believe me on this, I come from several generations of educators, and have seen the game played from both end of an issue. My grandmother was a principal, and I remember discussions around the dinner table where she would describe the dynamics occuring at her school, I also listen to my wife telling the same kinds of stories now.

The faculty is not a monolithic discipline machine, if you present a good arguement, are respectful of their concerns, you stand a better chance of getting approval on something that the admins may feel iffy about.

Listen to Iolaus, my friend. He knows whereof he speaks

Then again, keep that finger warm, 'cause if after three or four meetings and moderation and civility and level-headedness and good spelling they STILL won't come around, Well, look a at it this way.... Your ancestors only stayed level-headed for SO long. You wouldn't be breaking with tradition if you dug your heels in and got mad.

BTW, the Hamilton Dry Goods link is a good one. They sell on ebay, too. The Soccer/Rugby socks that Bear sells on his website www.bearkilts.com are really good. I've got a pair of white ones and I relly like 'em. For eight bucks, you can't beat 'em.

    Hey What's In,

I'm cryin' over your $10 find....what a way to become addicted to klits!

Check Jerry Griffin's adventures with school administrations 15 years ago in this article. Its down a ways by the pic of him hunting.

Surely America is a free enough country that a man can wear a kilt without hassle. But then last time I was down there in N.C. in the 60s they flew the state flag above the American flag in front of the schools...so who knows the mentality you're dealing with.

Scottish heritage being rampant in North Carolina surely you can find some clan support. Have you goggled for your on line clan websites?

Trouble with wearing kilts is they allow your testicles to grow and expand in the new freedom...sometimes the extra testosterone scares men who are used to keeping their manhood confined.

The Scots of old were "defiantly kilted." Stand tall, and stand proud.

Thanks for the advice. I couldnt have a meeting because my guidence counselor was sick. Her and the particular admin wont be hard but the board may be a bit more difficult. I will keep a level head about it for a little while. Thanks for the clan site. Ive been there before and Im not too sureif they will accept me. Im irish and scottish(mostly russian) on my dads side but we dont know where and my mom was addopted I dont know about my granfather (stratton if anybody knows if thats a clan) but my grandmother was a Crawford and reading their rules by addoption that would make me a part of the clan crawford but Im not sure how it works when she gets married.
