Yikes! Cucumber flavoured gin? No, I've not heard of Hendricks, but then I'm a bit of a stick-in-the-mud and am faithful to dear old Gordon's with ice and lemon (I was practically weaned on that!), although I'm quite partial to Sapphire gin.
In all seriousness, I am trying (somewhat desperately) to give up alcohol since I feel it is the main contributory factor to my increasing weight - the trouble is that I really do not care for the alternatives!

When I went on a diet, I dropped all the beer and what little wine I drank, and stuck with the hard stuff. ;) ...still melted it off.

Sounds like a case (no pun intended!) of quality (meaning strength) vs quantity. I enjoy a few glasses of wine a night, but a few similar sized glasses of vodka or single malt would definitely put me under the table! And I have enough weight to soak up a good bit.

Pass me that bottle of Barolo, and the corkscrew, please poppet.
I'm not at all partial to our domestic swill after having gone to Italy and sampled it (some of it practically fresh off the vine). I do have a thing for South American wines now....

I may be biased, but I really like alot of the wines (red, white, and ice) coming out of BC right now. To be honest, I haven't found a California wine that I really like yet.
We did the wine tour a few years ago and I fell in love with a lot of the wineries. It seems that since that time we have a new winery open every other month around here. We have a really nice fruit winery near my place that is great for those hot summer days.
Of course I am still very partial to any Australian Cabernet Sauvinon or Shiraz. You also can't beat a cheap bottle of Greek or Portuguise wine with certain meals. Souvlaki and Tsantalis is still agreat combo ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Unfortunately I don't get a lot fo wine at home as my wife seems to horde it. Her excuse is that she doesn't like the dark ales I make or the single malt I drink so the wine is hers. She was only to happy to share with Hamish, but if I looked that good in a kilt, I am sure I would get a glass or two. ;-)

As far as wines go, I tend to focus on the small local wineries. Not only does Maryland have about a dozen wineries, but there are 50 or more in both Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well as several in West Virginia.

Colin, Have you tried Sterling vineyards the Vintner's Collection Cabernet Sav. It is a very nice drink for a moderate price ($14.00 here in PA). So far it's the best CA wine I've found.
