A hat is a necessity for me because of the relative absence of hair and skin cancer issues. Having a Sqaumous Cell Carcinoma removed from the top of your head ain't no fun.

I wear a black balmoral with red and white dicing with the kilt, a ball cap in the summer, a flat wool cap in the winter and one of those little roll-up wool bucket hats with the short brim in a black watch tartan for the cold rainy winter weather.

Paco, thanks for the link to Tilley Hats, I'm going to look into one of those for summer, I think it will do the job for me.

I typically wear a Kangol or other scally cap. The occasional ball cap, but usually just on TCU Football game days!

There are great stories on the site about in indestructibility of the Tilly's. My favorite is about a zoo keeper and an elephant. Elephant eats the hat, zoo keeper gets it back a few days later. Happen several times. Hat survives with a GOOD washing. They are the tanks of the bucket hat word. They also hold on your head great without a chinstrap making you look foolish.

Thanks for the links. Both hats are basically what I have been looking for except that the one my dad had was coduroy. Very cool.

    That's not it.

It didn't have a band around the crown or the piping and had a soft cord bill as well.

Well, I typically wear a ball cap of some kind unless I'm dressed up. Howevr, I've been looking for a John Bull Top hat for some time (shorter that regular top hats - think Tom Petty in the "You Got Lucky" video or anything with the Traveling Wilburies). Biggest problem is that if I'm going to get one, I want it in real beaver felt and I can't seem to stop buying kilts long enough to save the money. In actuality I've only known what this hat was called for less than a year now, though I have been searching for one for nearly 15 years

They make a great version of this hat in beaver felt
I'm an 18th century guy born into the 20th century and have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

I don't generally wear a hat, but when I do it's typically weather related so I wear a military style ballcap or something with a wide brim on it.

They actyally have several different hats all similar to what I'm looking for. "The Mosby" may be what I need.

    Thanks

flat cap/driving cap...whatever you call 'em. I have four of them and swear by them.

When I sail (never sailed kilted) I just wear a baseball cap with a chinstrap.

And I, too have a couple of wool berets from the Military Surplus Store in my hat bag. A Glengarry is on the list, though, for sooner or later.
