[QUOTE]Sometimes, it's the guy (or gal) who him/herself is in some other way different from the crowd that can respond in a negative way to a guy in kilts: the kid with his pants halfway down his butt, the grossly overweight person, the pierced girl. One would think that anyone who had the experience of "being different," would be more sensitive and empathetic towards some else who is benignly different himself. Doesn't seem to work that way, does it?[QUOTE]

Perhaps they want to be the centre of attention and they don't like someone else hogging the limelight!

Only really bad responses were from idiots, some drunk and some not. The most outlandish was a remark from a young goth who said "Ya gotta be real stupid to wear somthin like that in public" while his heavily blackened eyebrows rose and his nose ring glistened in the sun light.

It's all perception, theirs and ours. I tend to ignore those who try to be smart-a#$ed about it. Does no good to to stoop to their level.

    How to spot a chav

It's a bit derogatory, but appears to be relatively accurate from what I've gathered from people I know in the UK.

Generally, "chavs" seem to be the kids who wear knockoff high-end clothing, lots of (fake) gold jewelry, and act like rebels without a clue.

Well, I am have worn the kilt and have gotten a few bad reactions, i mostly just ignore them. I wore the kilt to a language camp where culture and things are involved. I few kids asked why i was wearing a skirt..so i sayed "Why are you wearing pants?" and they kinda get the idea, after a while, people don't really care very much. One thing thought that gets me a little angry, yet happy at the same time is guys talk #%#! but girls just seem to love the kilt! Kinda makes up for all the ridicule, and then they seem to respect me more for daring to wear a "skirt" The most negative reactions/ confrontations are from men, young and old who believe all males should like jeans, leather boots, beer and football...its a little hard/ annoying, but the benefits are far more abundant!

I don't think "girls" is the right word.

The ladies seem to love the kilt, but as has been previously noted there is no form of life more cruel than a girl in her early-to-mid-teens.

The guys who accompany them talk smack for several reasons: they're insecure in their own sexuality and are afraid that wearing a skirt will make them "gay," they're jealous of the attention you're getting from "their" woman, et cetera.

Most people will just raise one eyebrow and move on rather than make derogatory comments.

I'll attempt to put in my two cents here...

I live in East Los Angeles, California and there are probably more hispanics in the surrounding ten mile radius than in all of Mexico.

I am Scottish and Norwiegian. I make the unchallenged claim that I am the only white man living in the immediate area.

I am a retired U.S. Army Soldier and saw action in more than a few campaigns so I have a few medals and ribbons adorning my Class A Uniform. The neighbors saw me in both my uniforms and my kilts many times and most latinos are very respectful of the military. Three years before I retired I married a Mexican girl who is a medical professional at USC. I live in East Los Angeles by choice and because of the fact that we are so close to my wife's offices.

I have had a couple of folks trying to be cute and mumbling things under their breath but as far as anything from the hispanic, (my wife would ask you; "Where is Hispania?"), Latin, Mexican, or what have you, community, only one thing serious enough to change my direction.

That comment came from some young "Cholo" (Mexican slang for young thug)who was in the front yard of some of the neighborhood's least desired residents who by the way I had made the aquaintences of years before, I generally came home on leave in uniform so they knew who I was and we generally talked sometimes for hours on end and I generally had more contact with them than my wife liked but the neighborhood accepted me.

Anyway, by the time that I had crossed the street to educate this young man about my kilt he was full of appologies since some of the older "Vatos" (Mexican slang for older cholos) who were friends of mine had already educated him in the ways that some men in uniform also wear KILTS just like the warriors and kings did in days of old. Other than this one time I have never had a problem with latinos.

I have been honked at,waved at and given the thumbs up sign, especially by the ladies and if I have happened to wear it to the local market I've generally gotten the friendly "Hola"! from strangers. People are the same all over.

There's an old saying that goes; "Ignorance is curable, stupidity is not". I don't believe that you are any more apt to run into somebody stupid enough to make a derogatory statement in the latino community than anywhere else. The latinos from whatever country they may hail, Norwiegians, Japanese, Greeks or whoever they are know what the kilt is. Anyone trying to mock it is simply stupid and you had the misfortune to run into that type.

Besides, who has the greater satisfaction, we, who are confident enough in our masculinity to wear the kilt or the big mouth that isn't?

    Chris.

Sounds to me like you didn't have a problem with a Latino, but just with a jerk.
