Got to say, it depends.
If I am going formal or semi formal, shirt in. Informally, I do with my shirt, t-shirt what I do when I wear pants or shorts informally. For the last few years it is shirt, t-shirt out. In this I took the lead from the younger guys. They never wear shirt in with jeans or shorts. Here's my thought . . . if the kilt is the equivalent of pants/shorts (only more versatile) and the fashion of the moment is shirt out, then with the kilt it is also shirt out.
This is a bit like hose. I suspect not too long ago hose pushed down would be very out. But hose scruched with boots is very much like the style guys wear with pants.
So, here's a pic of me, partner Jane and son James last year. We wre in Atlanta. It was mad hot. No hose, birkenstocks and shirts out. Very comfortable and I think a bit like the styles on kilt2.com

Shirts in, sweaters out...
I agree.
I also like the over-shirt left out. See Ron's pics.

"Shirts In" always, casual or not. If you want to attempt to hide your beer belly, go to the gym! [IMG] [/IMG]

What a memory! You might well be right, Iolaus, but I am sure I would never, ever have recommended that you should dress in a sloppy or untidy manner!!!

I like andyfg's son's "out" look. I don't think it looks tacky or unkempt, I think it is casual. Although when I dress casual I tend to tuck the shirt behind the sporran a bit.
My kilts are all tranditional height, which looks great for formal occasions, but in the Midsweat, I like to have a bit more breeze through my shirt. If I wear my kilts at the proper height, and tuck a T-shirt in, I think it looks goofy. Imagine pants up to the armpits look. My kilts are about 3 inches above Richland's on my waist.

The conversation was about color, not style. I believe the context was that you were answering my comment about prefering blacks and browns as a color scheme, rather than the bright modern colors so often seen.
This was back when I had just discovered UKs, and was trying to figure out how to "dress it up;" I hadn't yet accepted the posibility of wearing a tartan because of the aformentioned preference. I still feel that way; the only tartans I have are the Nightstalker and the Weathered Lamont, but I'm thinking about others.
