I like the Black Stewart and cannot wait to get it.
As a side note, do brown leathers look good with a Black Stewart?
If you want something warmer than a UK, you need to get one of their wool kilts. My standard (Nightstalker) is colder than all my UK's except for my Spartan.

I'd still get one, they are a great value for the money.

I'm only about 5'7" so I'm wondering if a Still water would be way to long for me??
I guessing too that overall height may not be as much of a factor as leg length.

Geez, I'm like 5'10" and the Stillwaters fit me fine...I was worried about the length too but I guess that 24" is the magic length. I assume, though, that the way that one is built has a lot to do with the fit...I go from a 36 waist to a 40 seat and the top of a Stillwater sits at about 2" above my navel.

Somebody out there has got to have had one successfully hemmed...perhaps we can hear from them. I don't think that hemming a SW standard would be such a travesty...you lose the selvedge but it would fit...what's the harm in that?

And I agree with so may of you...great way to get started and see if a kilt is for you. When I first hit the internet looking for a kilt I was seriously put off by the prices...then I found Xsmarks and, through it, discovered Stillwater and USAK where one could get a respectable kilt for a somewhat more reasonable price.

Funny story, I took my Stillwater to the tailor to be hemmed, and told him that I wanted it no longer than the middle of my knees. He said that's where its hitting you already!

I'm only 5'7", and he had to take out a ruler to prove it to me. I guess it depends on body shape, where your navel is, and where you want the bottom to hit. I too would be in favor of some shorter length options, even if it added a couple of bucks to the kilt.

    Best regards,

    Jake

I'm 5' 10 1/2", the 24" length worn the traditional way just above the navel suits me just fine. Your leg length is the most important factor.

Really really REALLY want a 22 inch drop on Stillwater.
Then hem or have hemmed the extra 2" and you will still be ahead of the game. It's a nice world, but it's not perfect. Sometimes we have to make a few adjustments here and there.

You look great!! Verrrrry niiiiiiiiiice and yummy. (in a totally "we both have significant others way" )

Thanks so much for the pictures! We are still debating on which kilt to get for the first, and this helps.

I do have some questions though - maybe you can help further. How tall are you? He is only 5'9" with relatively long torso and relatively short legs, so I am worried about it being just way too long.

Also, he is skeeered of the bright plaids - but *I* don't want a solid color. Unfortunately, Stillwater doesn't seem to have what we both would agree on - a mainly black kilt with *narrow* plaid stripes in red and maybe another color. Am I missing it on their site, or do they just have a really limited selection?

Also, he ummm, pretty much flat out refuses to wear the kilt hose and shoes and stuff. I'm happy just getting him to go along with my kilt fantasy, so what shoes would be better? Maybe something "rocker" like - like Docs or something? I kind of like the "rocker" look myself anyway.

Thanks so much again for any help you can give!

ETA: I guess I should have read the replies for the height/length thing. But the rest stands.

Oh yeah - forgot to say - too bad you don't live closer. We could so hang. We have swords on our walls too. It's fun being the strange ones.

The reason Jerry can offer the prices he does is to have only a few tartans / colors. I think that the Black Stewart or Night Stalker sounds pretty close to what you are looking for.

    l'esprit,

Take a look at this thread with him. This shows a lot of different casual looks from X Marks the Scot members around the world. It may give you two some ideas for his kilted look.

As for tartans, the nightstalker and the hunting McLoud seen to be what your are looking for (both are standard not economy). But they also have a solid black.

If you're going for the rocker thing, Docs do work (or any kind of military type boot as well). However, if he can pull it off New Rocks are ultimately cool http://www.newrockstore.com/

I know it is one of the Standard Kilts, and a bit more expensive, but have you thought about the Black Stewart tartan? It sounds to me like it would be close to what you are both looking for.

Docs or a hiking boot would work, however you might want to let him know there are good reasons for kilt hose, they really do help keep your legs warm.

Should be noted. The Stillwater Black Stewart is MUCH darker and more subdued looking in real life than it looks online at the Stillwater site.

Look in the pictures section for the Greenville kilt night. I think there is one in there.
