A friend of mine has a greatkilt in that material, from the apparently now defunct Tartan Web, which I think got taken over. There's a picture of him here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=19331 I can find a better picture if anyone's interested.

Gray, I love the colours of the Braveheart tartan, but not the tartan itself. I should like to see them in a more traditional style of tartan design. As for the kilt itself: well, it is difficult (and perhaps unfair) to criticise from photos alone, but the moment I began scrolling through your images I felt there was something wrong with the kilt - for several reasons really. Of course, you wear it well, as has been stated, and you are obviously making the best of it but I'd say that no-one could wear that particular kilt and have it look really good. To me, I am afraid, it looks like a cheap kilt although it is not, and I must agree with Leslie: it does look 'skirty'. Sorry!
No doubt these people sell a lot of kit to re-enactment groups and film companies but, frankly, from what I see you have there, I would not contemplate giving them an order for myself - or my Kollection!
Many thanks, all the same, for your very honest review.

Thanks Hamish, I appreciate your honesty but why don't you tell the whole truth?? Go on, say it....I just don't have the stature and good looks of Mel Gibson!!
Really, I hear what you are saying, and I'm sure Rocky won't mind me saying that I consulted him beforehand and I felt he might have had some doubts about whether a good kilt could be made out of this tartan, not that i doubt his ability!
I think if I wear it with a belt, sporran and a smile, I might pull it off..I mean..make it work!
All down to experience.

Accesorized properly would make it very rustic kilty. It's not a formal looking kilt and could not work as one. You wear it well, you wear with pride.

Graham: Was this the philabeg as offered by CC? http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/Kilts/b...phillabeg.html Or was it one of their regular casual five yarders? http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/Kilts/b...phillabeg.html
I've got one of their philabegs in ancient Black Watch, pv, with the sewn in waistband and buckles and straps. (How's that for a mouthful?) Oh and it's box pleated to boot. The pleats aren't sewn down, as you indicated, except at the waistband. The lack of a sewn in fell does give it that "skirty" look.

I was almost able to say that but me Mum wanted snow. She got her flippin' snow, I had to shovel it today when I got home from work.

Wasn't Mel Gibson born in the States? And only then "traded up" to Australia?

On the one hand, I kind of regret buying that one. I went into it with my eyes wide open, knowing that it wasn't going to be (what we think of today as) a "real" kilt. On the other hand, I thought, "ur-kilt" like a throwback to the days when the kilt was just evolving into its modern form.
There are times I think about taking the waistband out and sending it to Rocky to have him remake it into a USAK Casual.
